Scarlet Blog Tour: The Swoonworthy Heroes of the Lunar Chronicles

Today, I’m honored to take part in the blog tour for the paperback release of Marissa Meyer’s Scarlet; makre sure and visit the other stops as well. Each one has a giveaway, too; read all the way to the bottom for mine!

I’ve absolutely adored all three Lunar Chronicles novels (yes, I’m lucky enough to have already read Cress), and am extra excited to talk about one of my favorite parts: the male leads. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love the ladies too, but I can’t deny that I have a strong interest in a marvelous and swoony hero. The Lunar Chronicles is full of these.

cute guy alert

One added benefit of the large cast of the Lunar Chronicles is that you have your choice of swoon-inducing guys. Do you like the polite, regal type? Or do you prefer someone more muscular and laconic? Or maybe you like funny guys who like to break rules? If you answered yes to any (or all) of the above, then Marissa Meyer has a treat for you.

Now, are you ready to meet our three eligible bachelors?

Bachelor #1: Prince Kai

Our first bachelor is a freaking royal. So that’s a strong point in his favor. Think of all the elegant gowns you could wear while standing at his side. As a prince, he was well-versed in etiquette, so he knows how to treat a girl right. He’ll open doors for you (or he would if he didn’t have millions of servants to perform such tasks for him), admire your intellect, and leave you with ample time to yourself for reading while he tends to affairs of empire.

Prince Shin

Unlike our other bachelors, Kai’s strengths are ones of the mind. He’s quite handsome, but not the athlete the others are. In this relationship, you might need to take the lead, because he’s polite and will want to respect your boundaries. In fact, Kai’s the sort of guy that you might need to save sometimes, rather than the sort of hero who will always be saving you. Kai’s a good choice for ladies who don’t like to be the damsel in distress.

At least he values your sleep? Of course, just because you might need to make the first move doesn’t mean that the kissing will not be delightful. It will.

Goong kiss

Note: Kai comes from a Chinese background, but, for illustrative purposes, I’ve chosen Prince Shin Lee from the kdrama Goong to represent Kai; I am aware that Korea and China are not the same, but, as readers, we are most excellent at using our imaginations.

Bachelor #2: Wolf

In total contrast to Kai, bachelor number two is musclebound and strapping. If you prefer to be a damsel in distress (not necessarily because you can’t save yourself, but because he looks SO DAMN GOOD doing it), then Wolf might be the right guy for you.

scary wolf

Warning: he does bite. However, Wolf is fully house-trained, and mostly only bites enemies. Actually, when it’s not fighting time, Wolf is a really nice guy. Deep down, he’s rather shy and taciturn. He’d prefer to spend time with just his lady love, and you know he will take good care of you. It doesn’t hurt that he even looks hot when he’s mad, since he’s the gruff and grumpy sort, to everyone but you anyway.

wolf hot

Sure, he’s a bit dangerous and maybe not your average human, but boy looks good without a shirt.

wolf abs

Note: Tyler Hoechlin of Teen Wolf is playing Wolf today.

Bachelor #3: Captain Carswell Thorne

Captain (well, sort of) Thorne may have run afoul of the law. Okay, fine, we meet him in prison in Scarlet. If you’re totally opposed to criminals, even dashing ones, then Thorne may not be your favorite Lunar Chronicles guy (might I recommend Kai?). Thorne does even look good incarcerated, though, so he might charm you.

thorne captured

If you’re willing to take the risk on a lawbreaker, however, you get to enjoy Thorne’s dashing good looks, piloting skills, and sense of humor. For the Firefly fans out there (and those of you who haven’t seen it should go become fans), Thorne’s personality is the daring and swooniness of Malcolm Reynolds with the wit and silliness of Wash.

everyone hates Thorne

In Thorne, you may not have a prince or the most valiant of saviors, but you have a guy who will fight at your side and make you laugh even in the midst of a battle. We Thorne fans laugh in the face of danger. HAHAHAHA. Thorne may make life more complicated sometimes and stir up a good deal of trouble, but he makes it a lot more fun too.

tangled kiss

Note: Captain Thorne has been played today by Flynn Rider from Tangled.

Which Bachelor Will You Choose?

Now that you’ve met the three bachelors of Marissa Meyer’s Scarlet, which do you think will be your favorite or which already is your favorite if you’ve already read the book? All three is totally an acceptable answer. :-p

I haven’t read Cress yet but Thorne was by far my favorite the moment he appeared in Scarlet! Perhaps it’s my rebellion since he’s a criminal and all and I am a police officer’s daughter. Or maybe it’s just that he is the best ever! I think it’s the second one. I do like Kai too, though. Never really cared much for Wolf. I mean as a character, sure, but the interactions between him and Scarlet and his scenes didn’t make me *feel* any particular thing. He’s a nice addition, but just. . . *shrug*.

  3. Meg says:

Thorne all the way. He is totally a Mal/Wash mash up (thank you for pointing out the most perfect description ever and yes, everyone watch Firefly. Now.) plus, Flynn Rider (aka my favorite Disney love interest. It’s the smolder.)

Wolf fascinates me, but can’t hold a candle to my love for Thorne. I don’t know what my problem with Kai is but I can’t connect to him. He’s a perfectly nice guy (possibly too nice?) and I love that he’s an idealist (possibly too much of one?) but oh, I don’t know. He seems like too much of a damsel in distress. I like him, don’t get me wrong, I just don’t get smooshy feelings from him. I think part of it is because he’s been semi-sidelined since Cinder so he doesn’t feel like one of the gang to me. I’m looking forward to seeing what he gets up to in Winter because I have a feeling he’s going to be much more directly involved in the action.

  4. Haha this is an amazing post I love all of your little photos and gifts of the guy who made me laugh out loud in the car shop!!!I’m not sure which guy I would want… maybe Wolf because I like the whole primal thing and I enjoy being in the woods so maybe we could go on a moonlight hike together.

  5. I need to read Cress now because as soon as you described his charming personality and paired him with Flynn Rider I was hook line and sinker. I totally agree with what you said about Kai and Wolf as well. Kai is definitely a passive kind of character but is still so sweet and fun to be around. Wolf is definitely the complete opposite and I would be a damsel in distress just so I could watch Wolf saving me. Fantastic post, Christina! <33 I can't choose between them they're all such attractive choices!

  7. ALL of them. Seriously, I cannot choose. And your gifs made me love each of them even more. Although, I haven’t Cress yet, so Thorne still has the chance to sweep me off my feet 😉

THORNE. So much Thorne. I like a guy that can give me the smolder and leave me swooning, but also that can make me laugh and keep things exciting.

And just to repeat what everyone has already said, because it’s so true, awesome work with the gifs. They are all perfect!

Adorable post, Christina! After reading Cress as well, I would definitely have to go with Bachelor #3.

  13. Cali W. says:

The Wolf for sure!! We would go on moonlit walks in the woods. Thanks for the giveaway and I love this post. 😉

  14. Tammy says:

This is a series I must start, why haven’t I yet? So based on your description alone I’d say Captain Carswell Throne. You said sense of humor and that something that appeals to me above anything else.

  15. Thorne. Obviously. I’m going to add him to my collection of awesome captains (and pirates and privateers) which already includes Captain Hook from OUAT and Sturmhond. Byeeeeee.

Captain Thorne reminds me a lot of Captain Jack Harkness from Dr. Who, but I totally see the Flynn Rider similarities, too. Good choice! I think I have to go with Wolf, though. I adored him in Scarlet!

  17. Olivia H says:

This is an evil question! I can’t take away Cinder, Scarlet, and Cress’s boyfriends! But, I would go with Thorne because I adore his humor.

  18. Just in case, when I post my review of Cress, I seriously picked the first GIF from Flynn and say that I imagine Thorne looking like that :p So obviously, I can’t resist him and my pick would be Thorne! Wolf is a little too dangerous for me and Kai sounds sweet, but he doesn’t have Thorne’s charm and humor.

I have not read this yet, so I have no idea which guy I’d be rooting for (although I could tell you it would still be between Kai and Thorne). At first I was all oooooh Kai ooooohhhhh man candy! …but then you had me at Thorne = Mal. Also I ALWAYS go for the cute rogue – Flynn, George Cooper, Mal (although Wash will always be my favourite), Aladdin…I mean come on. They’re the best!

  21. Alyssa says:

I can’t wait for Cress! I actually love all 3 heroes and can’t pick one. I hope we see more of Kai in Cress.

I LOVE your gifs of Joo Ji-Hoon!! Makes me want to rewatch Goong. He was soooo freaking hot in that.

  22. Allison says:

Prince Kai with a mixture of Thorne. Politeness added with good humor is the best ingredient to a good bf.

  23. Katie says:

HAH! This post is awesome. I haven’t read CRESS yet (*shakes fist at everyone who got an ARC*), but I loved Thorne in SCARLET, so I’d have to say he’s the bachelor I’d go for. Although I did love Wolf. He was so shy and adorable! I loved how he was this big guy but totally sweet and not your typical big-strong-alpha-male.

  28. Kate C. says:

Personally, I always pictured Kai as Lee Seung Gi from King 2 Hearts. *swoon* Yes, he’s too old, but so is Joo Ji Hoon, technically. 🙂

PS- I like the post. 🙂

    • Christina Franke says:

By those standards, 98%of actors playing teens are too old for the part. Also, this is a good thing, because I can swoon over them without having to feel like a creep.

Of course, the fun of books is we can all have our own Kai. *hugs Joo Ji Hoon*

      • Kate C. says:

You know, I have yet to see Goong (though it is on my seriously long to-watch list). Perhaps that would change my mind about Joo Ji Hoon. I did see him in The Naked Kitchen, which has like the hottest first fourteen minutes of any Kmovie ever. And he is so super adorable in that. 🙂

(And I second your comment about being creepy. lol)

Anyway, in terms of which character I’d prefer, at current time it’s probably a tie between Kai and Thorne. If we could somehow fuse the two characters, that’d be fabulous 😛

Thorne, Duh. Aside from the fact that I love a guy with a wicked sense of humor. I also love a guy with a little rebellion streak, but who is great with his lady. *sigh* Also, Flynn Ryder is the man of my dreams. lol. Also, Firefly and Serenity were the greatest and Firefly should have never been canceled!

  37. Amanda says:

I’d pick Kai. He is by far the most genuine. We’d walk his gardens, appreciating nature… and plot ways to get rid of Levana.

  50. Fatimah Elghazawi says:

And I would have to say all three for the bachelors! Is it even possible to choose?! =P

  51. Rachel says:

WOLF!!! I have a thing for danger. 😀

  52. Holly says:

Hands down, I would go for Kai. He’s just so sweet and swoon worthy.

  53. Grace L. says:

    PRINCE KAI!!!!
I would like the quiet time we can spend together. Maybe gazing at constellations or reading~

  54. Kris says:

I’m so far leaning towards Thorne, because he’s a cheerful sort of criminal, and a guy who has (and puts to excellent use) a lot of useful skills for all that he seems most interested in goofing off. He TOTALLY did remind me of Flynn Rider as the book went on, with a dash of less-jaded Han Solo thrown in. I have to watch Firefly again to analyze the Malcolm/Wash combination comparison (aka, my excuse for marathon session time! Whee! :D)

  55. Nancy L.R. says:

Thorne! Only because I really liked him from the very beginning! He seems so fun to be with!
What would we do??? Hmmm, I’m not sure.

  56. Kris says:

As far what we’d do together – a good date would be him teaching me how to fly, and pick locks, because I like learning all about off-the-beaten-path things. And I’d entertain/annoy him by speaking largely in obscure (for his world :P) pop-culture references, mostly featuring the Doctor from Doctor Who, or Sherlock.

  57. Fallon Vaughn says:

I love wolf so much. He is on my top 3 book boyfriends of all time. I would go anywhere with him but another planet of our own would be cool.

  58. Morgan says:

I would definitely pick Wolf, who doesn’t love a bad boy!!! I would do anything any where with him!!!

  59. Stephanie says:

I would choose Wolf. I love an alpha male! Oh, Wolf has become my first ever book boyfriend. As for what we would do together, anything is possible.

Probably Kai. I like intelligent guys. I love Thorne too, though.

  64. Kimmy H. says:

    I would pick Thorne!
    Thanks for the giveaway!

I haven’t read any of these yet, but I’ve heard Thorne is amazing. And based on this, I’d have to agree–especially considering your Firefly comparison.

    Thanks for hosting the giveaway!

  67. kati says:

Love all of the choices! Nicely done.

  68. Brenda says:

I love Emperor Kai. Although he can be a bit of pushover, allowing you to do what you want because he wants you to be happy, he definitely is sincere about his feelings and he will treat you right.
I also like Wolf. He will protect you because he doesn’t ever want to lose you.
Captain Throne is the same as Wolf, he’ll protect you, but if you want the playful relationship, he’s the one to go for. Always cracking jokes and trying to brighten up the mood.
I love the series so much and I can’t wait for the next book.
    Thank you for the giveaway!!

  69. Kamla L. says:

In a perfect world, I would get to pick all three. Oh wait,… This is the booklife and I get to have my way. So yes, I’d pick all three. A girl can never have too many. I would pick Wolf if I was absolutely limited to just one though.

  70. JULIA says:

Dude… Wolf is obviously the hottest one of all! Did you see his six pack? Ya… that was a rhetorical question…

  71. Ashley says:

aah, I can’t choose! Honestly, though, I’m kinds leaning towards wolf because of his sweetness towards Scarlet in, well Scarlet. But actually… Thorne is just too irresistible. I can’t choose! Anyone else facing this problem?

  76. I think I’d pick Thorne. I like laughter. But I’m also a sucker for Flynn so that’s probably colouring my opinion, haha. Wolf doesn’t seem that bad either. If you can’t tell, I haven’t read the series yet! Since I haven’t read it, I can’t really, accurately think about what I’d do with them. Hmm…would a sporting date be too competitive for Wolf? Don’t want to make him angry but I imagine he’d look damn good with no shirt off. Shirtless ping pong? Ooh, I’ve always wanted to do the paint waterballoon date that Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger go on in 10 Things I Hate About You. That could be fun with either guy! 🙂 Thanks for the giveaway!
