Cover Snark (239): Girl Made of Snark

Welcome to Cover Snark, where the people are snarky and the covers quiver in fear. Since I don’t write many snarky book reviews here on A Reader of Fictions, Cover Snark is my outlet. If you click on the title of the book, where possible, I’ve linked to Goodreads. Clicking on the cover itself will show you the cover in a larger size, in most cases. Feel free to love covers I hate and vice versa. Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

Please note that you should by no means contact the author if you do not like their cover; they likely have ZERO control. Feel free to express opinions of the covers in the comments, but please do not @ an author on Twitter because of anything you’ve seen here.

Shiny and New:

1. A Princess in Theory (Reluctant Royals #1) – Alyssa Cole

Thoughts: THAT DRESS. THEIR CUTENESS. And I like the giant purple castle way more than I would have expected.

2. From a Certain Point of View: 40 Stories Celebrating 40 Years of Star Wars

Thoughts: It’s C3POkay.

3. Given to the Earth (Given Duet #2) – Mindy McGinnis

Thoughts: The earth only accepts those dressed in earth tones. Easier to absorb.

4. The Key to Everything – Paula Stokes

Thoughts: This is a new look for new adult. She actually looks like a college age person traveling around the world.

5. Fallen Heir (The Royals #4) – Erin Watt

Thoughts: Purple penis metaphor.

6. Obsidio (The Illuminae Files #3) – Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

Thoughts: I can’t look at this title without trying to sing it to the tune of Phil Collin’s Sussudio

7. Dogs with Jobs: Inspirational Tales of the World’s Hardest Working Dogs – Laura Greaves

Thoughts: I always paws for this breed of quality content.

8. The Jewelled Jaguar – Sharon Tregenza

Thoughts: Sweet purple hair. Gaudy dagger.

9. The Diminished (Untitled Duology #1) – Kaitlyn Sage Patterson

Thoughts: Diminished by being a pale imitation of a billion other covers.

10. Bygone Badass Broads: 52 Forgotten Women Who Changed the World – Mackenzi Lee

Thoughts: That title color and that art. This is what badass broads deserve basically.

11. The Titanic (Survival Tails) – Katrina Charman

Thoughts: The old white men can all sink, but these guys better get a lifeboat.

12. Ivy Aberdeen’s Letter to the World – Ashley Herring Blake

Thoughts: Super cute dress, and also the cutest tornado ever.

13. Hellcorp – Jonathan Whitelaw

Thoughts: Looks like it could be an excellent spinoff from Dead Like Me or something.

14. Hero at the Fall – Alwyn Hamilton

Thoughts: Well, that’s one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen in my life.

15. T Is for Tree – Greg Fowler

Thoughts: FONTGASM.

16. The Traitor’s Game (The Traitor’s Game #1) – Jennifer A. Nielsen

Thoughts: The concept’s okay (Sleeping Beauty’s thorns protecting The Sword in the Stone?), but the whole effect looks really brassy and gaudy. A better title font would help for sure.

17. Girlcott – Florenz Webbe Maxwell

Thoughts: Adorable cover and clever title. We will absolutely not be girlcotting.

18. Escape from Aleppo – N. H. Senzai

Thoughts: Holy fuck that’s gorgeous.

19. Girl Made of Stars – Ashley Herring Blake

Thoughts: Moby was right!

20. Trouble Never Sleeps (Trouble #3) – Stephanie Tromly

Thoughts: Weird, but I digby it.

21. Diary of a Teenage Jewel Thief – Rosie Somers

Thoughts: Don’t tell me to shh. You’re already telling everyone by wearing multiple pieces of stolen jewelry on one finger. I am not your problem.

22. A Conspiracy of Stars – Olivia A. Cole

Thoughts: I don’t like the random sizing on the font, but I really like the composition and image.

23. By a Charm and a Curse – Jaime Questell

Thoughts: I actually do like the title font, but I don’t much like the hot pink on that background. Also, what IS that background?

24. Freefall Summer – Tracy Barrett

Thoughts: That looks safe.

25. Beneath the Haunting Sea – Joanna Ruth Meyer

Thoughts: She looks like she’s slowly being absorbed by some sort of strange sea creature.

26. The Falling Between Us – Ash Parsons

Thoughts: RUN, FORREST, RUN.

27. Until Tomorrow, Mr. Marsworth – Sheila O’Connor

Thoughts: Man, there is nothing worse than when you’re all settled down for cat snuggles and chilluns ring your doorbell trying to sell you stupid shit you don’t need.

28. The Witch’s Blood (The Witch’s Kiss #3) – Katharine & Elizabeth Corr

Thoughts: Ah, it’s the Corrs Christmas album!

29. My Dear Hamilton: A Novel of Eliza Schuyler Hamilton – Stephanie Dray & Laura Kamoie

Thoughts: Apparently YA moves way faster than adult publishers.

30. This World Is Full of Monsters – Jeff Vandermeer

Thoughts: But at least they’re really cool-looking monsters.

31. The Library of Lost Things – Matthew Bright

Thoughts: How did this man and his rats get in my book-pile-infested house? Percy, clean up!

32. Party Discipline – Cory Doctorow

Thoughts: Normally I wouldn’t be into something this day-glo, but holy shit this whole thing is amazing tbh, down to the subtle use of eyes of watching.

33. 1985: Stories from SOS (SOS #0.5, 1.5) – E.C. Myers

Thoughts: I see what they did there.

34. Turtles All the Way Down – John Green

Thoughts: That’s one weird looking turtle. Anyone else disappointed at the lack of turtle cuteness here? Instead it’s going really adult literary fiction, which WHY?

Cover Battles:

1. Tales of the Peculiar (Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children #0.5)- Ransom Riggs

US Hardback vs. US Paperback: RH is really making the most of having gotten Riggs away from Quirk.

2. A Veil of Spears (The Song of the Shattered Sands #3) – Bradley P. Beaulieu

UK vs. US: Of all the stupid shit to make a veil out of. No wonder she’s not wearing the veil; that’s how you lose a damn eye.

3. Air – Ryan Gattis

US Hardback vs. US Paperback: I guess he’s gotten over his beef with that helicopter.

1 – there’s something strange about his left hand – some bad photoshopping or something

15- just so lovely & wonderful
