Cover Snark (234): Snark in Infamy

Welcome to Cover Snark, where the people are snarky and the covers quiver in fear. Since I don’t write many snarky book reviews here on A Reader of Fictions, Cover Snark is my outlet. If you click on the title of the book, where possible, I’ve linked to Goodreads. Clicking on the cover itself will show you the cover in a larger size, in most cases. Feel free to love covers I hate and vice versa. Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

Please note that you should by no means contact the author if you do not like their cover; they likely have ZERO control. Feel free to express opinions of the covers in the comments, but please do not @ an author on Twitter because of anything you’ve seen here.

Shiny and New:

1. The Witch of Demon Rock (Alfie Bloom #3) – Gabrielle Kent

Thoughts: Swoon.

2. Damselfly – Chandra Prasad

Thoughts: Watch out boy she’ll chew you up (Oh here she comes) She’s a maneater

3. And She Was – Jessica Verdi

Thoughts: My brain had so much trouble reading this font on font.

4. Don’t Cosplay with My Heart – Cecil Castellucci

Thoughts: My desire to watch Ella Enchanted again is all this cover’s fault.

5. Live in Infamy – Caroline Tung Richmond

Thoughts: I love the title treatment, but the image below lets it down.

6. Spliced – Jon McGoran

Thoughts: Karma chameleon.

7. Turn It Up – Jen Calonita

Thoughts: Aca-scuse me?

8. Ink (The Skin Books #1) – Alice Broadway

Thoughts: Orange you glad this is so gorgeous?

9. Teeth of Marrow (River of Teeth #2) – Sarah Gailey

Thoughts: Hippopotomazing.

10. A Kiss in the Dark – Gina Ciocca

Thoughts: People kissing on cars is clearly a Ciocca cover trend. And this is my fave of her covers so far. Busted should get in on the kissy car look too..

11. The Hazel Wood – Melissa Albert

12. American Panda – Gloria Chao

Thoughts: I’d look that happy if I had that beverage too.

13. Everywhere You Want to Be – Christina June

Thoughts: That sunrise.

14. When Light Left Us – Leah Thomas

Thoughts: *revels*

15. No Filter – Orlagh Collins

Thoughts: Could have used that filter.

16. Heart of Iron – Ashley Poston

Thoughts: The Death Star got a makeover!

17. Kids Like Us – Hilary Reyl

Thoughts: Hello, lovely.

18. Things a Bright Girl Can Do – Sally Nicholls

Thoughts: FAB-U-LOUS.

19. Dread Nation – Justina Ireland

Thoughts: Did anyone else hear a chorus start singing or was that just me?

20. In Search Of – Ava Dellaira

Thoughts: In the vein of Emma Mills’ covers, which can only be a good thing. Though I do wish there was an ending to that title. But I suppose that’s effective marketing because I do NEED to know what someone is in search of.

21. Wrath of the Storm (Mark of the Thief #3) – Jennifer A. Nielsen

Thoughts: Prongs has returned from death, and he’s coming for everyone who was ever mean to Harry.

22. Lizzie – Dawn Ius

Thoughts: It’s a bit of a hack job tbh, but I am absolutely pro the groan-inducing pun of the tagline.

23. The Chaos of Standing Still – Jessica Brody

Thoughts: I would like a dress in this pattern. Thank you.

24. The True Queen (The Impostor Queen #3) – Sarah Fine

Thoughts: I want to love this but it feels a bit off in basically every respect. The fake flames and ice magic are hilaribad. The way the red Q blends into the red dress. And the expressions feel a bit off too.

25. The Summer of Broken Things – Margaret Peterson Haddix

Thoughts: Really cool though very reminiscent of I’ll Give You the Sun. I do like this take better though.

26. Finding Felicity- Stacey Kade

Thoughts: It’s on Hulu Plus, girl, but I wouldn’t really recommend watching it.

27. Feeder – Patrick Weekes

Thoughts: I love the subtle monster teeth but I loathe the Peter-Pan-posing silhouette thing.

28. Dreamer (Traveler #2) – L. E. DeLano

Thoughts: These covers just look so bad and self-pub. Swoon Reads usually does better than this but crowd-sourcing your cover design only works if you offer some good options.

29. The Last to Let Go – Amber Smith

Thoughts: Just buy new twine.

30. Between the Blade and the Heart (Valkyrie #1) – Amanda Hocking

Thoughts: The Valkyrie trend was like five years ago but okay.

31. Rosemarked – Livia Blackburne

Thoughts: So I actually first spotted this cover a month or two ago, but I thought it was a placeholder. But apparently they actually went with nauseating pink fog as a cover direction.

32. You Won’t Know I’m Gone (The Black Angel Chronicles #2) – Kristen Orlando

Thoughts: Well, I wouldn’t have but you just told me so…

Cover Battles:

1. Shadow and Bone (Grisha #1) – Leigh Bardugo

US Original vs. US Redesign: I feel like this cover is going to fight a battle for dominance against The Raven King. And it is going to lose.

2. Siege and Storm (Grisha #2) – Leigh Bardugo

US Original vs. US Redesign: As adorable as this is, I love the original so much.

3. Ruin and Rising (Grisha #3) – Leigh Bardugo

US Original vs. US Redesign: Well fawkes.

4. The Secrets of Hexbridge Castle (Alfie Bloom #1) – Gabrielle Kent

UK Original vs. UK Redesign: Now THIS is how you redesign.

5. The Talisman Thief (Alfie Bloom #2) – Gabrielle Kent

UK Original vs. UK Redesign: Stole my damn heart here tbh.

6. In Other Lands – Sarah Rees Brennan

US Take 1 vs. US Take 2: Two fins way way up for redesigning that hot mess.

7. A Quiet Kind of Thunder – Sara Barnard

UK vs. US: Not sure about the red on the hands. And besides the UK cover is GORGEOUS.

8. Tower of Dawn (Throne of Glass #6) – Sarah J. Maas

US vs. UK: LOLOLOLOL. Apparently these covers look really silly without the gorgeous illustrated Celaena.

WTF of the Week:

Back next week (probably). I was running behind and cut it to save a bit of time.

  3. 1. Loooove. Makes me want to learn more about the series!
    2. This is actually weirdly appealing. I like it.
    7. Exactly. Aka I need it.
    10. Don’t like the font but I love the rest!
    11. It’s going to be so shinyyyyy.
    12. Cutest cover ever.
    16. Kinda disappointed tbh.
    22. Ahahah your comment!
    25. This is very pleasing, I like the hint of texture.
    30. I like the synopsis but the cover is so awful.
1.-3. I like the new covers but the old are still my favorite.
    8. HATE IT SO MUCH. It’s boring and unoriginal and doesn’t match the series. Since it’s “Book 6”, I feel like it should match, Celaena or no. I’ve seen a fanmade cover with Chaol in a wheelchair and it looks so badass. Ughhhhhh.
