Cover Snark (222): I Capture the Snark

Welcome to Cover Snark, where the people are snarky and the covers quiver in fear. Since I don’t write many snarky book reviews here on A Reader of Fictions, Cover Snark is my outlet. If you click on the title of the book, where possible, I’ve linked to Goodreads. Clicking on the cover itself will show you the cover in a larger size, in most cases. Feel free to love covers I hate and vice versa. Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

Please note that you should by no means contact the author if you do not like their cover; they likely have ZERO control. Feel free to express opinions of the covers in the comments, but please do not @ an author on Twitter because of anything you’ve seen here.

Shiny and New:

1. Fragile Chaos – Amber R. Duell

Thoughts: This cover is GOLD. (I mean, okay, the fonts are a bit meh, but who’s looking at the fonts?)

2. Here, There, and Everywhere – Julia Durango & Tyler Terrones

Thoughts: In which green and orange figure out how to be best friends. This shouldn’t work as well as it does.

3. Shadow Girl – Liana Liu

Thoughts: I know I’ve said I’m over face covers but EXCEPTION.

4. War of the Cards (Queen of Hearts #3) – Colleen Oakes

Thoughts: These are so beautifull and always make me lol at how they sniff each other’s skirts. I’m a grown up.

5. Before Now – Norah Olson

Thoughts: I can’t decide if I hate this font treatment or if I just hate the color and background. Eh, maybe it’s both.

6. The Mind Virus (The Wired #3) – Donna Freitas

Thoughts: This looks like a still from a Lady Gaga video.

7. A Map for Wrecked Girls – Jessica Taylor

Thoughts: I’m not sure why these flowers are over the ocean but do I care? Not overmuch, no.

8. Right Where You Left Me – Calla Devlin

Thoughts: I will leave you on my shelves, you beautiful book cover you.

9. The Place Between Breaths – An Na

Thoughts: Why oh why does the face not line up?

10. Last Star Burning – Caitlin Sangster

Thoughts: The shiny metallic title doesn’t really seem to fit with the background, which I love.

11. Siege of Shadows (Effigies #2) – Sarah Raughley

Thoughts: We now know what happens when those inflatable tube men catch fire.

12. Book of Shadows (Diary of a Haunting #3) – M. Verano

Thoughts: You know she’s classy because she’s got those pinkies popped.

13. Feral Youth – Shaun David Hutchinson

Thoughts: This makes me think he’s like Smeagol/Deagol, arguing in the marsh water reflections.

14. The Hanging Girl – Eileen Cook

Thoughts: I want to be able to actually SEE the model. Why is the title over her face?

15. All Rights Reserved (Word$ #1) – Gregory Scott Katsoulis

Thoughts: NANOLION is much more intriguing than a sculpted bust with a wig on it.

16. Uncanny – David Macinnis Gill

Thoughts: The individual elements (tagline, title treatment, feathers with a blood drop) make no sense to me together, but it’s certainly aesthetically pleasing.

17. The Hole in the Middle – Kendra Fortmeyer

Thoughts: Even I was not expecting this book to be so literal. Seems like it would be more to dramatic to actually show a girl with a hole in the middle. I mean, it worked for Ransom Riggs.

18. Daughter of the Burning City – Amanda Foody

Thoughts: Smoke title up from the purple city yesssss.

19. Nothing – Annie Barrows

Thoughts: Hate the silhouettes, love the textual sass.

20. Invictus – Ryan Graudin

Thoughts: For all that this is trying to be intense and dramatic, it’s more cloudy and boring.

21. Why I Loathe Sterling Lane – Ingrid Paulson

Thoughts: SHIP.

22. A Semi-Definitive List of Worst Nightmares – Krystal Sutherland

Thoughts: IS THAT SALEM? That skeleton hand! Excellent across the board basically.

23. Running Full Tilt – Michael Currinder

Thoughts: Unfortunately, in running full tilt, he left behind clear tracks, so he was caught anyway.

24. Sun Warrior (Tales of a New World #2) – P.C. Cast

Thoughts: Appropriation 2: Electric Boogaloo.

25. Sorcery for Beginners (Codex Arcanum #1) – Euphemia Whitmore & Matt Harry

Thoughts: Cover art for masters.

26. Flashtide (Flashfall #2) – Jenny Moyer

Thoughts: DysTypical.

27. Long Way Down – Jason Reynolds

Thoughts: Just terrified the shit out of myself when I noticed there was a reflection. Like a ghost snuck up on me.

28. I Capture the Castle – Dodie Smith

Thoughts: I don’t know if I think this cover really fits the book for me, but who gives a shit when it’s so gorgeous honestly.

29. Hunting Prince Dracula (Stalking Jack the Ripper #2) – Kerri Maniscalco

Thoughts: I would like to stake a claim on that dress.

30. The Curses (The Graces #2) – Laura Eve

Thoughts: These covers just make me mourn what The Diviners series could have looked like.

31. Goodbye Paradise (Hello Goodbye #1) – Sarina Bowen

Thoughts: I actually literally cannot figure out what’s going on here.

32. The Ocean in My Ears – Meagan Macvie

Thoughts: This cover is totally buggin’.

33. The Most Dangerous Thing – Leanne Lieberman

Thoughts: Sunburns.

34. Run Away with Me (Come Back to Me #3) – Mila Gray

Thoughts: Don’t think I will, thanks.

35. Final Fall (Lock and Mori #3) – Heather W. Petty

Thoughts: Fits perfectly with the covers for the rest of the series. In this case, that’s not a good thing.

36. Strange Fire (Anchor & Sophia #1) – Tommy Wallach

Thoughts: It’s infuriating how cool this cover is. Wallach doesn’t deserve it.

37. Quests for Glory (The School for Good and Evil #4) – Soman Chainani

Thoughts: Noooo, why is she with a boy??? Those girls should clearly date each other. I am so angry.

Cover Battles:

1. Nemesis (Nemesis #1) – Anna Banks

US Hardback vs. US Paperback: I’m glad Princess Sepora isn’t a white girl in silver face paint anymore.

2. Labyrinth Lost (Brooklyn Brujas #1) – Zoraida Córdova

US Hardback vs. US Paperback: The paperback is so much more my thing. That gate’s just so lacy and intricate.

3. The Last True Love Story – Brendan Kiely

US Hardback vs. US Paperback: They gave it another turn of the wheel.

WTF of the Week:

WTF of the Week began as a special category for one cover I saw, but was so popular it became a recurring feature. Here, I highlight covers, both new and old, that I’ve found, which, upon viewing, made me either snort or say something along the lines of “Dear God, what is that thing?”

1. The Art of Hero Worship – Mia Kerick

Thoughts: “Shhhh, lie there while I explain to you the best way to worship my ginger beard.”

2. Vampire Witch – Eileen Sheehan

Thoughts: No biting wit needed. Simply admire this.

3. Unraveling (Second Chances #1) – Micalea Smeltzer

Thoughts: IS SHE BANGING AN EMPTY PAIR OF PANTS?!?!

I actually cannot pick which LABYRINTH LOST cover I like better. I suspect I am going to end up buying the paperback, too. Also had not seen that new Krystal Sutherland cover until now and I can’t figure out why I like it so much but I totally do.

A+ point about the Graces/Diviners. Definitely a fan of the former!

I most definitely like paperback LL cover better. It made me want to try the book again, haha. I adore the new Sutherland cover; it’s so irreverent and colorful.

And next week check back for Diviners ranting lol.

It’s impressive how good most of these were! Also, I really need Last Star Burning to be beautiful as the cover and not garbage. Please oh please. *trots off to find the cover snark with the Diviners rant I know exists*
