Badass Series Endings

If you’re like me, you probably have some fear of series (despite starting a bajillion of them). Series are both the best and the worst. I mean, if I love the characters in something, obviously I want there to be endless books about them. On the other hand, a series can also bring out the worst in storytelling. See: all American television lasting more than five seasons basically. By the end of a series, often my love has turned to antipathy or boredom. Series often go out with a whimper or a faceplant (*cough* Ruin and Rising *cough*), rather than a triumphant journey into a bloody sunset.

Today, I want to share with you guys series that I think did it right. I have a series spreadsheet (thanks, Debby), and I categorize series endings as to how satisfying they were for me. These are the ones that were wholly satisfying. Often, they’re the best in the series, but, even if they’re not, they’re still so strong and emotionally fulfilling.

I’m not going to go into why, because I don’t want to spoil anything, since these series endings are not going to be super predictable, thus my love. I’m also focusing on genre fiction, since contemporaries tend to be less reliant on one another to be enjoyable, so it’s easier for them to be successful follow-ups. There are more that I thought were really good than just these, but I narrowed it down to my tippy top very favorites.

I loved the series ending for the Soul Screamers series by Rachel Vincent! That series actually got better as it went on. The Shadow Falls series by CC Hunter is another one with a good ending. And if you haven’t read the Revenants series by Amy Plum, you totally should! I did not see that ending coming! I loved the series ender for the Shatter Me series, but I know not everyone did.

  2. Great post! I love Rachel Aaron (/Bach) and I’m so glad to see her books on this list. I loved the ending for Legend of Eli Monpress, but I haven’t read the ending of her Paradox trilogy yet. I’ve also been wanting to pick up the Lumatere Chronicles forever.
