Cover Snark (178): The Nerdy and the Snarky

Welcome to Cover Snark, where the people are snarky and the covers quiver in fear. Since I don’t write many snarky book reviews here on A Reader of Fictions, Cover Snark is my outlet. If you click on the title of the book, where possible, I’ve linked to Goodreads. Clicking on the cover itself will show you the cover in a larger size, in most cases. Feel free to love covers I hate and vice versa. Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

Please note that you should by no means contact the author if you do not like their cover; they likely have ZERO control. Feel free to express opinions in the comments, but please do not @ an author on Twitter because of anything you’ve seen here. Let’s keep it kind.

Cover Battles:

1. Silver in the Blood (Silver in the Blood #1) – Jessica Day George

Silver in the Blood - Jessica Day George
Silver in the Blood (Silver in the Blood #1) - Jessica Day George

US Hardback vs. US Paperback: Similar but I think I do like the new one better.

2. In-Between Days – Vikki Wakefield

In-Between Days - Vikki Wakefield Aus
In-Between Days - Vikki Wakefield

Australian vs. US: This looks idyllic but the author is Australian, so I’m assuming there are poisonous snakes in that water or something. But hey, I’ll take possible snakes over shadow billboard.

3. Chasing Stars (After Eden #2) – Helen Douglas

Chasing Stars (After Eden #2) - Helen Douglas
Chasing Stars - Helen Douglas

UK vs. US: Well, it’s better than the execrable US cover for book one, so I guess that’s something. But the US cover is still a more boring version of the UK cover.

4. The Unfinished Life of Addison Stone – Adele Griffin

The Unfinished Life of Addison Stone by Adele Griffin

US Hardback vs. US Paperback: I love when a redesign totally rocks it.

5. Positively Beautiful – Wendy Mills

US Hardback vs. US Paperback: There are a lot of creepy house horror covers, so I like the paperback for being something different.

8. Updraft (Bone Universe #1) – Fran Wilde

Updraft - Fran Wilde hardback
Updraft - Fran Wilde

US Hardback vs. US Paperback: I wanted to read this book anyway, but this cover took my desire from mild to GIVE IT TO ME NOW.

9. Armada – Ernest Cline

Armada - Ernest Cline hb
Armada - Ernest Cline

US Hardback vs. US Paperback: This is tough. I legit like both designs, and they appeal to me in very different ways. Slight preference for the paperback at this point but it could be different by the time this post posts.

10. The Mad Scientist’s Daughter – Cassandra Rose Clarke

The Mad Scientist's Daughter - Cassandra Rose Clarke UK
The Mad Scientist's Daughter - Cassandra Rose Clarke

UK vs. US: Though I greatly prefer the UK cover, I don’t think I like it enough to pay all the extra money for a foreign edition. That’s how I feel about these designs.

11. Lying Out Loud – Kody Keplinger

Lying Out Loud - Kody Keplinger
Lying Out Loud - Kody Keplinger pb

US Hardback vs. US Paperback: This seems like rather a lateral move. It’s not terribly photoshopped but we also got rid of the POC and it’s just a white girl’s face.

12. Daughter of Deep Silence – Carrie Ryan

Daughter of Deep Silence - Carrie Ryan
Daughter of Deep Silence - Carrie Ryan

US Hardback vs. US Paperback: That’s a hairy redesign.

WTF of the Week:

WTF of the Week began as a special category for one cover I saw, but was so popular it became a recurring feature. Here, I highlight covers, both new and old, that I’ve found, which, upon viewing, made me either snort or say something along the lines of “Dear God, what is that thing?”

1. Fairy – Shane McKenzie
Fairy - Shane McKenzie
Thoughts: Last thing you want in your bedroom while you sleep is a velociraptor with wings.

2. The Dragon and the Rose (Celestra Forever #2) – Addison Moore
The Dragon and the Rose - Addison Moore
Thoughts: What comes next? Butterfly sex?

3. Love Cats – Maryanne Christiano-Mistretta
Love Cats - Maryanne Christiano-Mistretta
Thoughts: I want so badly to legitimately love this because LOVE CATS, but the guy’s face looks illustrated and nothing fits and that heart and the background and just wow. The poor cat looks vair vair offended.

  1. The Updraft redesign has me so conflicted since normally I always get the hardcover, but the paperback is soooooooo pretty! Also I love that they moved to showing two POC on the redesigned covers, progress!

    38. p sure she has horns and they’re kinda awesome

CB1. I think the new one looks more YA though i really love the girl’s swirly silver hair

CB2. US ALL THE WAY IT’S SO PRETTY

CB4. oooo A+ on the Addison Stone redesign

CB11. I hate the original Lying Out Loud cover so much that I’m not even that mad that they took away the hot POC guy. Despite it just being a girl’s face it’s still soooo much better (WILL NEVER BE OVER HOW THE ANGLE OF THE MODELS’ FEET ON THE FIRST COVER DOESN’T MATCH THE ANGLE OF THE FLOOR)

CB12. ooo clearly in the minority here but I like the paperback redesign best. lovely swoopy composition, cool blue, pretty pretty. The hardback is weirdly spaces and her position is bizarre (though i love the title treatment)

    WTF3. LOVE CATS!!!!
