October 2015: Month in Review

What I’ve Been Up To:

This is where you can catch up with what I’ve been doing lately, IRL and with other bits of pop culture!

Blogging:

You guys, I’m happy to report that the mini reviews and decreased number of posts have performed their function: I don’t feel like quitting anymore. I am feeling way happier about this whole thing right now. I’ve not been putting as much time in and stats are down last I checked, but I’d rather be happy and less popular than stressed out about my hobby.

Here’s the book haul for this month, all from my Instagram, which you should totally follow if you like books and cats and honestly how could you not?

Shenanigans:

Blergh. Things have been stressful and annoying IRL mostly. I am very much hoping things are on the upswing. Cross your fingers for me, okay?

Music:

October was a GREAT month for music, even if it wasn’t the greatest month personally. My top favorites were the new CHVRCHES album (MOST EXCELLENT), the Australian band Winterbourne which I listened to obsessively for like two weeks, and the Hamilton musical soundtrack. Check them all out, my peoples!

Here’s my full playlist of new finds for the month. 🙂

Movies & TV:

First, I DNFed a kdrama, Sungkyunkwan Scandal. I’m really sad about this because I was really excited for this one. GENDERBENDING. An incredibly smart heroine genderbends to become a scholar and why why why was it not amazing. There’s even a hate to love ship. Unfortunately, the ship has all the chemistry of a box of cardboard. There’s no passion there, no frisson of sexual tension. I made it through six episodes and I was fucking bored the whole time. Finally, I spoiled myself on the ending to see if it was worth continuing and by god was it stupid, so no goodbye drama. Ship rating: moldy cardboard box.

Last year, I’d decided I didn’t really want to keep up with TV as it airs but now I’ve changed my mind again. A person’s prerogative after all. I’ve been working on catching up with some of the shows on now. Here’s what I’ve been watching:

I’m still watching ANTM, though I’ve taken a break and will binge the last few episodes soon. I’ve been trying to process the fact that it is OVER. HOW CAN IT BE OVER? I JUST FOUND THIS MAGIC. It’s a damn shame this is the last season, because it’s really not one of the best. Then again, that’s probably why it’s ending. 🙁 If Lacey doesn’t win, I will be incadescently angry. Ship rating: J-Smooth and Mamé are pretty cute.

gif lacey wasting my time

I watched the first couple Brooklyn Nine-Nine episodes from this season before embarking on this mad effort to catch up on shows. It’s itself. I don’t have a lot of comments on this one yet, because I wasn’t smart enough to make notes and now it’s been a while. :-p

iZombie was the first show I wanted to catch up with and OH MAN WAS IT WORTH IT. Seriously, I’m still a little mad that none of you sat me down and forced me to watch it because I am fucking in love. Unless they ruin it along the way, there is no doubt this will be a new tippy top favorite show. Even though I don’t really have a ship, aside from Ravi with everyone. He has the gift of banter such that he has chemistry with all humans, especially dudes. I also completely adore the unique twist on zombies. Plus, anything Rob Thomas features his fave actors in cameo roles, and I love seeing the old VMars crew again. Ship rating: ship all the things but without much fervor and also surprise pain.

Sung and I caught up with Fresh Off the Boat, which is so much fun. I adore this show. My favorites are Eddie’s little brothers. The whole family is flawed and weird and likable. Of the bunch, I find Eddie the least compelling character ironically, but even he has his charming moments, like when he puts a boombox on his grandmother’s lap to enter with drama. Very much recommended for folks who enjoy family comedies. Ship rating: Uhhh, I do like the parents’ relationship a lot but it’s not a shippy show.

Shae recommended Quantico as a show from this season that might be worth checking out. I watched three episodes I think, and I will be going back to try some more of it. It reminds me of ALIAS, which means that 1) it’s compulsively watchable, 2) there’s a lot of hot eye candy, and 3) it’s melodramatic and might end up being terrible. All I know is that if one of the brown girls ends up being the terrorist, I am going to fucking burn this thing to the ground (translation: I will rant on twitter), but surely they wouldn’t be that stupid. Right? RIGHT? Ship rating: jury’s still out.

gif kiss quantico
Wham bam thank you man

Several people mentioned Scream Queens as a fabulous new show, so I tried it. But, um, yeah. It’s very much not my thing. Like, at all. I made it to the housekeeper getting thrust headfirst into boiling oil in episode one before I threw in the towel. To me, it was gross and not funny. Oh well. Ship rating: it looked like they were setting something up but what do I know.

Finally, the reason I’m now behind on all the previously mentioned ones that I didn’t quit is that I’ve been madly trying to catch up on Arrow and The Flash, of which I’d watched one or two episodes of Arrow like a year or two ago. I’ve got about a week before the current season episodes get taken off of Hulu and I’ve got two seasons to go. ACK. Anyway, I’ve watched almost two seasons of Arrow so far. Honestly, I kind of don’t get it. I mean, I enjoy it sort of, but I don’t think it’s very good. Mostly because it takes itself way too seriously. Almost all of the characters are such drips. My favorites are Thea, Walter, Diggle, Tommy, and Felicity so far. Well, of the good guys. I also very much love Malcolm Merlyn and River (yeah, she has a name on the show but I just call her River).

gif diggle shirtless arrow
It’s not all bad though. I mean.

Other shows I’m planning to try: The Flash, Wicked City, Heroes Reborn (unless any of you tried it and it was horrible), Supergirl, Jessica Jones (I’ll watch Daredevil first), and The Man in the High Castle. What are you guys watching?

Reviews Posted:

I read 30 books this month! I’m so proud. I also reorganized my TBR so that I’m not behind anymore. Well, I mean, I still am, but I’m also reading some ARCs before they come out again. I’ll get caught up this month I think. GO ME!

DNFs:

Um yeah, so I DNFed a lot this month. Womp womp. On the plus side, I also read a lot. I’d like to think those two are linked, because I definitely get slumpy when I try to push through books that aren’t clicking for me. In most cases, my issue was that the voice just did not click for me, though two of them were DNFed for being in second person (THE HORROR). Another one had world building I couldn’t wrap my head around and one was too technical.

I love Arrow and the Flash! I’m sort of in love with all the men on Arrow. I might actually like the storyline of the Flash better…but the eye candy on Arrow is just the best.

I kind of love Heroes Reborn. But, Supergirl was probably the biggest disappointment I’ve had in a long time. Seriously, the writing is better in some of small pile of DNF YA books I have. Such bad writing.

Which DNF was too technical, and which ones were in second person? You have a lot there that are in my TBR pile and that would help me me out a lot.

Unfortunately, I’m actually not particularly attracted to any of the guys on Arrow. Like, I get why people are but they don’t push my particular buttons. Such sadness.

Huh, cool. Glad to hear Heroes Reborn might be better than seasons 3 and 4 at least. *shudders*

Well, I’ll still try Supergirl and give it a chance. The first few episodes of Arrow were complete dreckitude. Just the shittiest writing. It’s improved, so maybe Supergirl will too?

The Art of Language Invention was too technical. The Fifth Season and So You Want to Be a Jedi? were in second person.

  2. Angie says:

Ohhhhhhhhhh yay new music for me to add to my list.

I’ve been slowly rewatching Brooklyn Nine-Nine before I catch up on this season and enjoying every minute of it.

iZOMBIE IS LIFE. So glad I listened to you and watched it. I’m a few episodes behind now but so in love with all the characters except Major Boringface.

I watched the Quantico pilot and really liked it but I don’t know when/if I’ll get around to the rest of it. I have the same fear of one of the brown girls being the terrorist. I really want it to be the boring white guy that’s only there because of his parents but I doubt that’ll be the case *prepares to burn everything with you*

I’m so behind on Arrow and Flash those are probably getting shoved into the I’ll get around to you whenever you get cancelled drawer.

I’ve been watching and super loving Empire and Hawaii Five-0, and of course The Mindy Project because Mindy is life.

Yesss, please join me in my obsessions.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine isn’t a favorite favorite for me, but I really enjoy it. I think the chief might be my favorite. 🙂 Also, Rosa.

YAY I AM SO GLAD IT IS WORKING FOR YOU. There are a few scary moments but there are a lot more silly hilarious wonderful moments.

It really really needs to be a white, All-American type, because anything else will probably make me want to kill it with fire. That would be cool and work against stereotypes and seriously please. Of course they immediately framed a brown girl for it, which is super comforting.

It’s going to be super tight on whether I actually manage to catch up in time. I may have to watch some um less legitly.

Empire is one I want to try someday, but I have no more time to catch up on things. I am planning to catch up on Mindy, though there’s less of a rush because Hulu. I had quit when the ship sailed because I was afraid after the New Girl fiasco, but apparently they’re not going to do that. 😀

  3. I binged the first two seasons of Arrow last summer and LOVED it but I can see how it def takes itself too seriously. The pilot caught my attention but then it took 6 or 7 eps to really get going. It’s very CW haha. But the people are pretty, everyone kicks ass, and I like the comic book stuff. I want to start watching The Flash and Supergirl. I also want to try Fresh Off The Boat and Brooklyn 99! I really suck at tv that isn’t sports these days 🙁 The only shows I’m fully caught up on are Modern Family and Adventure Time.

I hope IRL gets better for you soon, I’m sorry it’s been stressful and annoying <3 It's been stressful for me too but luckily twitter and fun fandoms have been keeping internet me mostly happy.

YOU READ SO MUCH! GO YOU! I DNFed Lock & Mori too, it was kind of weird, I hated Sherlock, and it wasn't Every Breath hah.

    • Christina Franke says:

I hated the first 6 or 7 episodes. Then they finally stopped with Oliver’s voice overs and it got a bit better. I still don’t think it’s the best show, but I’m going to stick with it. Haha, I suck at sports, so we balance things out. :-p

Yeah, internet me is okay. If I can’t be mostly pleasant online, I don’t get on.

Lock & Mori felt like the awkward little brother or sister of Every Breath. No thanks. I’d rather reread that instead.

  4. I’m happy to hear you are enjoying blogging again! 🙂 I have my fingers and toes crossed for you.

I’m going to take a closer look to your Spotify list when I have the chance. I always like to find new music.

iZombie is high on my to-watch list. I finished Daredevil and while I liked it (the action scenes are really good) I’m not completely in love. My new show is White collar and hello eye candy. Also, subtle sense of humor and so far an interesting story line.

      Awww, thank you!

I’m very much into alternative rock, so, if you are, we can flail about music together. 😀

iZombie is totally amazeballs. My hopes aren’t that high for Daredevil, but I’m really excited for Jessica Jones and I think they’re kinda related? I have a thing about doing stuff in order, which is why I’m watching Arrow.

I watched a bit of White Collar when it was first on, but fell away from it for some reason. The eye candy was seriously A+.

  5. Heather says:

Ahhh, I love Brooklyn Nine Nine! It’s one of the few shows Jeremy and I can watch together without silently (or not so silently) judging the other person’s taste. Haha! I am so not surprised you like Rosa 🙂 she is my favorite, too.

Yay, I’m glad blogging is fun again 🙂

Ugh, I hope IRL stuff gets better. Let me know if I have to open any cans of whoop ass!

    • Christina Franke says:

Hahaha, Sung and I have a similar relationship with TV/movies. There’s an overlap but a lot of stuff results in judgment from one party or the other. :-p

Maybe I’ll say that you need to just so you have to come down here to deliver it. lol

  6. Angie F. says:

Scream Queens is the absolute worst and I love it! Clearly I am a very disturbed person. It’s my favorite thing on TV right now, followed very closely by iZombie! And I am sooooooo upset about ANTM being over and I am with you on Lacey must win!!! Every show I love gets cancelled. I am cursed.

Which books were in second person?! I love second person! I think Winnie Flynn is one (right?), so what is the other?! I must knoooow!

Haaaaa, that’s totally fine. It just wasn’t a humor that appealed to mine unfortunately. I’ve seen a bunch of people really loving it, and I hope it continues being awesome for you. LACEY LACEY LACEY.

Winnie Flynn wasn’t from what I remember. The Fifth Season and So You Want to Be a Jedi? were in second.

  7. I’m so glad you’re not quitting anymore… I might visit much recently because I’m currently working myself to death, but I sure would miss seeing your posts. And who’s going to recommend me good adult books? haha

I have a bunch of Heroes Reborn sitting on my DVR waiting for me to watch. I’ve been trying to catch up on all the other shows I’m behind on before starting a new one. I’m still watching back episodes of The Strain which has become pretty cheesy but my fiance still loves it so I continue to suffer. lol

Oh GOOD. You didn’t like Lock & Mori either. Because I was starting to think I was the odd man out there. I was so bummed too because the author lives in my town. Was going to go to her event but then I read her book and that would have been awkward. We’ll Never Be Apart was a low rating for me too. Bummer to see Maplecroft on there.. I’ve had my eye on that one for a while.
