Unpopular Opinions Tag

When I saw this tag on Pretty Deadly Reviews, I knew that I had to do it. I’m not sure where it originated (apparently on BookTube somewhere), but I do know that I didn’t create it.

A popular book or series that you didn’t like

Vampire Academy

Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead

Now, to be fair, I liked the first couple rather well. When I first started the series, only the first two books were out, and I was reading along as the later books came out. I quit at book four when it became clear both that my ship would not sail and that there was no way I could reconcile myself to the actual ship.

A book or series that everyone seems to hate but you love

When the Sea is Rising Red - Cat Hellisen

When the Sea is Rising Red by Cat Hellisen

To be clear, it’s not so much that everyone hates this series. The reviews of When the Sea Is Rising Red were middling from the friends I know who read it (and only one other person read the fucking fabulous sequel), of which there were only seven on Goodreads. The thing is that nobody knows about this series with awesome LGBT elements and a really cool, original fantasy world. Not to mention Hellisen’s brilliant prose. I don’t want to be alone on this one anymore, guys. GET ON THIS.

A love triangle that didn’t end the way you wanted it to

Ouran High School Host Club - Bisco Hatori

Ouran High School Host Club by Bisco Hatori

I’ve quit a whole lot of paranormal series because the romance didn’t look like it was headed towards the right ship. In manga, however, second love interest syndrome has hit me so many fucking times. Ouran’s the worst because it’s a reverse harem, where the heroine has SIX guys to choose from. There were only two with whom I didn’t ship her at all, but she chooses one of those. It’s so FRUSTRATING, and I will NEVER be over it. My top ships, incidentally, are Hikaru and Kyoya. Story-wise, I like Hikaru for Haruhi, but I just think Kyoya’s super hot and that they would take over the world if they were a couple.

A book genre you hardly reach for

Every Breath - Ellie Marney

Mystery

Pictured: an exception. My issue with mysteries is that they tend to lack in character development, but, if more mysteries were like Ellie Marney’s Every series, I would pick them up with much greater frequency.

A popular or beloved character that you do not like

Anna and the French Kiss - Stephanie Perkins

St. Clair from Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins

I’m not going to rant about St. Clair again, but suffice it to say that I think Anna deserves a whole helluva lot better, and I don’t find him remotely swoony. If you’re curious about why, check out my review, but use discretion.

A popular author you just can’t seem to enjoy

The Iron King

Julie Kagawa

According to my blog archives, I’ve read six things by Julie Kagawa (a novella and six novels), and, though I loved The Immortal Rules, I was meh on the follow up, and didn’t even bother finishing that series. At best, I’ve liked her stuff, but I’ve never loved anything, and I really dislike the Iron Fey series a lot.

A popular trope you’re tired of seeing

Mockingjay

Character Assassination to Make a Love Triangle Work

I’ve written a post on this trope, so I won’t repeat all of that. I think there are elements of it in Mockingjay, though my love of the series as a whole is intense. Basically, I think love triangles work much better when the heroine’s choice doesn’t end up being dictated by one of her options suddenly acting like an asshole or being guilty of something awful.

A popular series you have no interest in reading

Bloodlines - Richelle Mead

Despite my antipathy towards the way VA’s ship turned out, which I guess I can spoil freely, since this series’ existence spoils it pretty effectively anyway. Adrian was the fucking best, and, at the time, I didn’t know he’d get his own series, so I was pissed. Though I’ve heard the romance is way better, I’m still bitter. Plus, I had the end of the series spoiled for me, and this series just will not work for me.

A movie or TV show that was better than the book

room with a view kiss

A Room with a View by E.M. Forster

Though I like the book too, there’s no beating the film. It is perfection, and, if you try to tell me differently, I will be forced to stick my fingers in my ears and yell “NOT LISTENING” until you go away. I love this movie so fucking much that I will hear nothing against it. I had to choose this one because it’s my favorite movie. Literally, FAVORITE.

    Yayyyy you did it!

Wholeheartedly agree about St Clair but you already knew that. Hate him. A lot. Hate hate hate. Stab.

I also very agree with you about the character assassination trope. While I did ship THG the other way, what happened with Gale was decidedly Not Cool and the more I think about it, the more I dislike it. Because Gale was a great character. Other examples are slipping my mind right now but ever since you wrote that post on it, I’ve been able to notice it more.

  2. Well….I love Ouran but I’ve never read the ending 0.0 who does she end up with???? I’m kind of tired of seeing the Hunger Games too xP but I really wanna know who Haruhi ends up with?

Bahaha. I love this! Um, I am 100% with you on St. Clair – I think I miiiiight have liked Anna and the French Kiss a bit more if it hadn’t been for him – I couldn’t understand why he was a desirable love interest at all, for many of the reasons you point out. (The cheating? The weird blaminess towards Anna? That he seems to have no sense of personal responsibility? Baahhh. I also super HATE with a fiery burning passion the trope where the girlfriend-someone-doesn’t-want is horrible. It’s meant to excuse the love interest, which I get, but I don’t know, on a deeper level, it also seems like kind of casual misogyny. Whatever! I hate it forever! This goes along with your point about character assassination being used to resolve a love triangle – I really hate it because I feel like it ends up limiting the heroine’s – usually the heroine! – choice. Like … only one of these choices is a real choice because the other dude is sekritly evil or something.)

tl;dr – St. Clair can go jump in a lake. I share your feels.

I have When the Sea is Rising Read. I read a review that said it has flying seahorses….or something along those lines, which just screams my name really.

You aren’t alone in your opinion of St. Clair. I found him appallingly creepy and disgusting.

Adrian deserved so much better. But, I really liked Bloodlines. Haven’t finished the series, yet. I’m frightened I won’t like the rest.

HELENA IS PERFECTION IN THAT FILM.

  5. Susan says:

OMG. I hate St. Clair too! GAH, I don’t get the big deal with him or the book at all. He’s A STRAIGHT UP DOUCHE.

Thanks for letting me vent on how truly awful he is. 🙂

    My comment….was eaten….why gods why?

Anyways, I am so on board with this!! I already copied this and have all my replies just ready to go!

OMFG, can I have a HELL YEAH on St. Clair?? I didn’t get the mass appeal of this douchebag.

  7. Wheeee, I am doing this right now, so obviously I am looking at your answers and stuff. Vampire Academy and Mockingjay are also getting decent rants on my version *sigh* *shakes fist*

I was still kind of planning to check out the Bloodlines series when my fury about Vampire Academy wears off, but… bad idea? I’m almost tempted to ask you about the ending but idk. But we had similar feelings about VA. Ugh, life is hard. And why does it have to be a six book series??? So long.

Nowww I definitely need to watch A Room with a View. I don’t know anything about it at all, but um that gif and it’s your fave? Need.

KYOUYA AND HARUHI FOREVERRRRRRRR. I will never get over those tiny hints of swoon. It was perfection.
