Cover Snark (126): The One with the Bears

CoverSnarkChristina2

Welcome to Cover Snark, where the people are snarky and the covers quiver in fear. Since I don’t write many snarky book reviews here on A Reader of Fictions, Cover Snark is my outlet. If you click on the title of the book, where possible, I’ve linked to Goodreads. Clicking on the cover itself will show you the cover in a larger size, in most cases. Feel free to love covers I hate and vice versa. Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

Shiny and New:

1. Wrong About the Guy – Claire LaZebnik
Wrong About the Guy - Claire LaZebnik
Thoughts: The guy you steal a boat with is never a keeper. #JessForever #neverforget

2. Invisible Monsters (Talker 25 #2) – Joshua McCune
Invisible Monsters (Talker 25 #2) - Joshua McCune
Thoughts: This looks like a placeholder. A nice placeholder, but a placeholder just the same.

3. Paperweight – Meg Haston
Paperweight - Meg Haston
Thoughts: Paperfloat?

4. Saint Anything – Sarah Dessen
Saint Anything - Sarah Dessen
Thoughts: Anyone else amused that they just redesigned all of her covers to match and didn’t design this one in that style?

5. Encore to an Empty Room (Exile #2) – Kevin Emerson
Encore to an Empty Room (Exile #2) - Kevin Emerson
Thoughts: If the room is empty, why headphones? Blast it from the speakers!

6. The Leveller (The Leveller #1) – Julia Durango
The Leveller (The Leveller, #1) - Julia Durango
Thoughts: There does appear to be a “raze this city to the fucking ground” button though.

7. Emancipated – M. G. Reyes

8. Ice Kissed (The Kanin Chronicles #2) – Amanda Hocking
Ice Kissed (The Kanin Chronicles #2) - Amanda Hocking
Thoughts: NGL, this backdrop is gorgeous, but one step onto that icy path and your ass will be in the water along with the rest of you.

9. Crystal Kingdom (The Kanin Chronicles #3) – Amanda Hocking
Crystal Kingdom - Amanda Hocking
Thoughts: Hello, Elsa. I’ll just leave before you slam the ice door in my face.

10. The Edge of Forever – Melissa E. Hurst
The Edge of Forever - Melissa E. Hurst
Thoughts: I know they’re going for symmetry, but that does not make putting a double E in the middle a good idea. The Edge of Foreever.

11. Make it Last (Bowler University #3) – Megan Erickson
Make it Last (Bowler University #3) - Megan Erickso
Thoughts: Make it laaaaast. Make it last. Don’t you know everyone wants their boner to last? (For erections lasting more than four hours, please consult a medical professional.)

12. Blood Soaked Ashes (Eramane Trilogy #2) – Frankie Ash
Blood Soaked Ashes - Frankie Ash
Thoughts: Because of the author’s last name, this sounds like it could be a Game of Thrones-themed Christmas card. As for the cover, I guess I’m glad it’s not a sword?

13. This Broken Wondrous World – Jon Skovron
This Broken Wondrous World - Jon Skovron
Thoughts: Oooooh, font love. It’s pretty cool, though I do not like the way the tagline is shoe-horned in there.

14. Tracers – J. J. Howard
Tracers - J. J Howard
Thoughts: It’s that stock photo again. From the original Sway design! And another design that got redesigned. Does this mean this one will bite the dust? I sort of hope so, especially since I’m not sure if it bodes well that the book is more excited about the movie than about its own release.

15. Sisters of Blood and Spirit (Untitled Series #1) – Kady Cross
Sisters of Blood and Spirit - Kady Cross
Thoughts: I am puzzled. I mean, that definitely looks like one model. Are they twins that are identical, only not the hair and skin tone? Or are they doppelgangers? What the heck is going on?

16. Atlanta Burns (Atlanta Burns #1-2) – Chuck Wendig
Atlanta Burns - Chuck Wendig
Thoughts: Maybe Atlanta shouldn’t have pissed off General Sherman.

17. A Book of Spirits and Thieves (Spirits and Thieves #1) – Morgan Rhodes
A Book of Spirits and Thieves - Morgan Rhodes
Thoughts: This just looks so cheap. I think it’s due to the font, which is hard to read on that background.

18. The Heart of Betrayal (The Remnant Chronicles #2) – Mary E. Pearson
The Heart of Betrayal (The Remnant Chronicles #2) - Mary E. Pearson
Thoughts: The realism of this is so intense. She so totally looks like she’s actually standing on that bridge. Oh wait.

19. Revenge, Ice Cream, and Other Things Best Served Cold (Broken Hearts & Revenge #2) – Katie Finn
Revenge, Ice Cream, and Other Things Best Served Cold (Broken Hearts & Revenge #2) - Katie Finn
Thoughts: Even though I am currently freezing cold, I want that ice cream. That girl is wasting it, letting it melt like that. SHE DOES NOT DESERVE IT. *kills her and takes her ice cream*

20. What We Knew – Barbara Stewart
What We Knew - Barbara Stewart
Thoughts: I do like the tree branches, but otherwise there’s nothing new here. Its release is timely though, since it’s Halloween-colored.

21. Not After Everything – Michelle Levy
Not After Everything - Michelle Levy
Thoughts: Not after I covered your floor with crinkly paper!

22. Jubilee Manor (Landry Park #2) – Bethany Hagen
Jubilee Manor (Landry Park #2) - Bethany Hagen
Thoughts: The swirly blue thing makes it look like she’s about to go slide into an alternate universe like in Sliders. Hopefully she’s taken somewhere that fancy dress is appreciated.

23. A Girl Undone (A Girl Called Fearless #2) – Catherine Linka
A Girl Undone (The Girl Called Fearless #2) - Catherine Linka
Thoughts: A glass shattered. A sun setting. Hair in a wedge shape.

Thoughts: Let the creepiest water gun fight in history commence.

25. School for Sidekicks – Kelly McCullough

Thoughts: I wonder what this used to be a school for. Frontkicks?

26. The Stratford Zoo Midnight Revue Presents Romeo and Juliet – Ian Lendler
The Stratford Zoo Midnight Revue Presents . . . Romeo and Juliet
Thoughts: Romeo’s one cocky bastard.

27. The Storm (The Rain #2) – Virginia Bergin
The Storm - Virginia Bergin
Thoughts: She doesn’t have enough sense to come in out of the rain.

28. Inked – Eric Smith
Inked - Eric Smith
Thoughts: Not all the way to INKredible, but I may NEEDle it.

29. Anne & Henry – Dawn Ius
Anne & Henry - Dawn Ius
Thoughts: Who doesn’t love an MPDG who bites their face off?

30. The (Totally Not) Guaranteed Guide to Stressing, Obsessing & Second-Guessing (Jessica Darling’s It List #3) – Megan McCafferty
The (Totally Not) Guaranteed Guide to Stressing, Obsessing & Second-Guessing (Jessica Darling's It List #3) - Megan McCafferty
Thoughts: These colors pain me, but I do appreciate the awkward pose of “where the heck should I put my arms?” which is very middle school.

31. Ratscalibur – Josh Lieb
Ratscalibur - Josh Lieb
Thoughts: So cute, minus how terrifying I find the furry rat but and tail on the letter R.

32. Fable Comics – Chris Duffy, Ed.
Fable Comics - Chris Duffy, Ed.
Thoughts: Love the old school art that reminds me of Fractured Fairy Tales.

33. Unspoken (Shadow Falls: After Dark #3) – C.C. Hunter
Unspoken - C.C. Hunter
Thoughts: That’s more like Twilight. I guess they got impatient waiting for dark to actually fall.

The World Forgot - Martin Leicht & Isla Neal
Thoughts: Abominable. Just what.

35. Ferals – Jacob Grey
Ferals - Jacob Grey
Thoughts: It definitely looks like that crow is going to try to fly away with him. Good try, crow.

36. I Am Princess X – Cherie Priest
I Am Princess X - Cherie Priest
Thoughts: Does she put posters on signs as a calling card like how Zorro would carve Zs into things? Ngl, this is not as cool.

37. Mania (The Night Walkers #3) – J.R. Johansson
Mania - J.R. Johansson
Thoughts: Um. Mainly unfortunate. The title’s the exact cover of Nickelodeon’s slime. I guess that’s something.

38. Fish Out of Water – Natalie Whipple

Thoughts: LOOK AT THE CUTE LITTLE KISSY FISH. Now I want to watch Fantasia.

39. Shades of Doon (Doon #3) – Carey Corp & Lorie Langdon
Shades of Doon (Doon #3) - Carey Corp & Lorie Langdon
Thoughts: The fact that they released a pixellated version of the cover is not really impressing me ngl.

40. Salt & Stone (Fire & Flood #2) – Victoria Scott

Thoughts: Fucking stupid redesign with a fucking stupid eye. This is an assalt to mine eyes.

WTF of the Week:

WTF of the Week began as a special category for one cover I saw, but was so popular it became a recurring feature. Here, I highlight covers, both new and old, that I’ve found, which, upon viewing, made me either snort or say something along the lines of “Dear God, what is that thing?” If you would like to be part of the fun and have spotted a truly hilarious or horrifying cover, submit it and your snark to readeroffictions@gmail.com and you might be included, though I will filter through submissions and limit the number of entries per week.

1. Bear – Marian Engel
Bear - Marian Engel
Thoughts: I like the dual meaning of bear and bare on these covers.

2. Snowbound with a Bear – Sierra Black

Thoughts: Looks like someone wants a bear job.

3. Unbearable (Russet Falls #1) – W.H. Vega
Unbearable - W.H. Vega
Thoughts: The model’s pose was probably in response to “imagine that you will be the abs of bearotica.”

    1. Iiiiii can’t tell the Claire LaZebnik covers apart anymore. Themes are cool but this has evolved to standard template levels and it’s not even a series so zzzzzzzzzz

    2. Invisible monsters = so Buffy. Agree about the placeholdery-ness.

    3. LOVE. PRETTY, SOOTHING, MINIMAL, WEIRD, CUTE. WELL DONE OTHER MEG WHO REALISTICALLY HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS BUT WE SHARE A NAME SO I HAVE KINDLY THOUGHTS.

    4. HA!

    5. Maybe the headphones are the empty room and it’s all a metaphor. Did you know John Green invented the metaphor?

    6. Someone had better shout LEVEL UP and then shit goes to hell. This is about a Matrix-esque video game world, right? If not it’s misleading as hell.

    7. #excellentsnarking #sotrue #iknowthatfilter

    8. I don’t know why I dislike this but I do.

    9. See above and repeat.

    10. They’re going for symmetry but is it just me or is the center dividing line sliiiiightly off center?

    11. Now all I can think of is when Jason drank the vamp blood and got the boner that wouldn’t quit and fuck I miss True Blood

    12. If I ever become friendly with the Ash family, remind me to avoid their weddings.

    13. VERY INTERESTING I QUITE LIKE THIS YES I DO

    14. What a lovely stock photo collage. It looks like a designer presented their mood board and the art director was like PERFECTION LET’S GO WITH THIS

    15. At least this one is centered. As for what’s going on, excellent photoshop work and the directional blur filter.

    16. LOVELOVELOVELOVELOVELOVELOVE

    17. Zzzzzzzzzzzzz

    18. I LIKE THE TYPOGRAPHY AND THE BLUE OKAY? If the girl wanted to fall off the bridge and stop wrecking the shot I wouldn’t be sad.

    19. Still love these.

    20. I like it? I don’t like it? I don’t know.

    21. Um. This is basically an already existing cover but with crumpled paper and a different font. https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1327962621l/39002.jpg

    22. Just when I think I’m super over pretty dress covers, something like this comes along and I’m like preeeeeeettyyyyyyyyy

    23. Okay.

    24. I LOVE THIS SO MUCH WHY DO I LOVE THE WEIRD ONES SO MUCH?

    25. Maybe it was always sidekicks but someone cracked the lightening bolt and then fixed it with duct tape because they went to the Meg school of EVERYTHING CAN BE FIXED WITH DUCT TAPE AND IF IT CAN’T FUCK IT YOU DON’T NEED IT ANYWAY

    26. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

    27. Your thoughts are masterful

    28. I’ll allow it.

    29. I DON’T KNOW WHY I LOVE THIS SO MUCH BUT I DO. I feel like it’s a really good representation of what the book is going to be like.

    30. Love these

    31. Not my fav illustration style

    32. Even less my fav illustration style

    33. Thi reminds me of a more colorful version of the Night World omnibus covers

    34. Whut.

      1. Yeah, the covers are boring. I am with you on that. Also, aren’t a lot of people freaked out by feet? I’m not sure if they’re a good focus for a cover.

      3. AHAHAHA. Good job getting lucky, other Meg. Actually, hold up, that works.

      5. Wait, I think your information is wrong. I do believe Lauren Oliver invented the metaphor.

      6. No idea. Reading all the blurbs would take me forever. Plus, this cover’s so ugly that I’m automatically not interested.

      8. I love it and I hate myself for that. Is it the random rabbit symbol on the covers in this series that you hate?

      10. According to my super scientific holding-a-piece-of-paper-up-and-measuring test, the left side is just a smidgen wider. Fail all over the place.

      11. AHAHAHA. Except for the betrayal.

      14. IT IS SO BAD. Just like did you even try? And all the photos have different filters and shit. BLERGH.

      15. It may be excellent photo shop. I believe that. but I also don’t like it.

      17. This one’s like comically shitty.

      18. It would be SO much better without the girl. I do love the blue.

      19. They are so very fab. Completely charming and silly and perfect for the books.

      20. What we knew did not include our opinions on this cover.

      21. How have I never heard of this book? I hate both of these covers so….

      22. That’s funny because I ADORE pretty dress covers and I’m eh on this one.

      23. I also hate this.

      24. I LOVE THIS ONE TOO. THE ART IS SO PRETTY. AND ALSO AHAHAHA WHAT IS THIS.

      25. Ah, that could be. Excellent reasoning.

      26. I was so excited to make that joke. I hope I didn’t cock up.

      27. GODDAMN IT. EVERY DAMN TIME. FUCK THESE POSTS.

      29. This is going to be awful and I am going to read it and hate myself. BUT WHAT IF IT’S NOT?

      30. This one hurts me.

      42. Right on. They must be hiding something.

      5. Tagline is drunk. It should be fired.

      6. I just hate everything about this cover. Including her mismatched hair.

      7. Oh, I now see that. Only the one is tilted and whatever I am good at observation okay.

      10. FOREEVER.

      16. I love everything but the wings coming out of that dog’s left front paw.

      17. It might be Andye hair modeling. I mean, you never know.

      18. I do agree about the blue, but the rest of it is like eh.

      22. Cannot decide if I love the dress or the shoulder bling. I am so conflicted. I think I would like the shoulder bling with a different dress? THIS IS SO DIFFICULT.

      26. Why are you sorry for this?

      27. MEG TOLD ME TOO. I FIXED IT AND I HATE MYSELF.

      28. Thanks for STAMPING by.

CB3. I mean, I don’t really care, but also WHY BOTHER? And people like the brown better SO WHY.

CB8. So many people are voting US and I do not understand.

    33. GOD DAMMIT, STOP WHITEWASHING BEFORE I DO SOMETHING GREAT AND TERRIBLE.

    34. Her lip-biting is hilarious, but the designers REALLY should have stuck with the original illustrated cover and made the sequel covers as such.

    40. The only crime worse than eye covers is when there are eye covers on a duology but they both use photos of the same eye. You should be able to put them together and get two opposite eyes, not two right eyes stolen from two different faces!

    41. NOPE NOPE NOPE NOOOOOOOPE

CB5. I ask myself the same question and can only conclude her manuscript for VA fell on someone’s Chihuahua and killed it, so the cover designer has been exacting their vengeance ever since. (Why yes, I adore absurd explanations. That’s how I got to my “Penguin uses drinking games to decide on cover redesigns” theory.)

ALL THE WTF COVERS: I guess this week was bear week. I’m still amused by man-nipple on covers because man-nipples are weeeird.
