Help a Blogger Out

Dear readers, I have questions for you. What will follow is a series of polls about the blog as a whole and about specific posts. You obviously don’t have to answer them if you don’t have opinions and you don’t need to have an opinion on everything. I’ll only be asking questions about the things I’m thinking about changing. For example, I WON’T be asking what length of reviews you prefer or how many reviews a week you like to see, because I’ll do whatever I want either way. There are, however, a lot of things where I could go either way, and, if there’s a strong preference, I want to do what you guys like. I make no promises to follow the votes on everything, but I’d like to get an idea.

Book Hauls

Lately, I’ve been trying to do the vlog thing and it’s hard. I have a series of questions about what you guys like in a book haul post. I do think I’ll keep posting them, but, depending on responses, might go back to just taking a photo of the books and writing out my thoughts on them rather than videos.

Also, I’ve been toying with the idea of going to just monthly haul posts, rather than posting them every Saturday (unless I got zero books). Do you have thoughts.

Cover Snark

Alright, guys, I have a LOT of questions about Cover Snark. This is a post that is labor-intensive and I don’t want to be spending time on aspects that you guys don’t like. So.

First, I’d like to know about holidays. For example, I often don’t post during Christmas week and occasionally I end up skipping other holidays like Thanksgiving. Should I? (I will if I’m too busy, but most holidays are fairly low key in my family.)

Cover Snark posts vary in length by the number of interesting new covers I have found that week. They go from about 20 to about 70 on the weeks when Harper releases all of their new covers at once. On the weeks with a bunch, should I be more particular to keep the posts shorter or do you guys want EVERYTHING? I’m tailoring the answers to what helps me, so if none of them apply to you, skip it and probably you don’t like Cover Snark much anyway.

I’ve been toying with the end of the post. I really like honoring a good cover or multiple. In last week’s post, I tried something new and I’m curious what your thoughts are on how this should be done:

General Blog Questions

First, I’m curious how many posts you’d like to see. Lately, I’ve been posting 7-8 times a week, which is down from my usual. Do we like this better? Less? Either way, I’m aiming to post about 6 reviews a week, though lately I’ve been busy enough I’ve not been hitting that target. So if you choose just 7 posts a week, that means there would be 2 posts that weren’t reviews generally (one of which would be Cover Snark). More posts means more discussions and things.

For a while, I was doing a thing where I randomly chose a commenter or two every month to receive a book of their choice that I’d read that month. It mostly ended because of laziness, since making the list of who’d commented is surprisingly labor-intensive. Anyway, question:

Also related to commenting, I’m trying to get back into the swing of things and I’m curious how my behavior affects commenting. I always read them, but I’ve been really bad at responding lately.

With this one, I’m mostly curious about how much my post linkage on Twitter matters.

Okay, I do have one question about reviews. I mostly post ARC reviews pretty close to the publication date just because that’s when I’ve been able to get to them. If I do get to read them early, I usually post no more than a month ahead. Do people have feels on advance reviews?

Okay, I think that’s all the questions that I have at the moment, but if you have other, constructive suggestions, let me know in the comments! Thanks for the feedback!

I really need to do this sort of thing as well, but I worry that I’ll get no responses.

I would like you to work on being Ryan Gosling please.

Just kidding, I like that you’re Christina, but if you could find a way to like, I don’t know, catch and deliver me Ryan Gosling? That would be cool. That’s not asking too much, right?

  3. A poll like this can be very useful. We assume so many different things based on experience and whatnot, but these assumptions can be wrong more often than not. Getting this type of feedback is awesome.

I have poked around the idea of doing some sort of poll on our blog to get a general feel.

Thank you for letting us do some input! I love your blog! 😉

Thought for the poll: There are probably covers that you can be fairly confident won’t be in the running, so you could just include the ten or so you think people will want to vote for and an option for “omg how could you not think one of the other covers was awesome enough??” or something along those lines 😛

Hmmm, I just don’t entirely feel comfortable making that call. Plus, on last week’s all but like four had votes the last time I checked. Which actually surprises me!

Fair, people can be so inconvenient 😉

Also for the advanced reviews question, I wanted to add that I like the shorter mentions that people have started doing when they have very strong opinions about a book since that can help me decide on ARCs, but I feel like it is better for readers that aren’t bloggers for a review to be closer to the pub date.

Frankly, it’s not so much an issue right now, but I was curious how it would fall out. It differs so much I’ll probably just do what I want. I don’t have the time for much advance reading now, but if I do at some point I think I’ll maybe put something for those in my monthly wrap up. FUTURE FICTIONS or something.

I am intrigued how 10 people follow you via email subscription when there is not an option on your blog (or I am too stupid to find it). Do I have to be a member of some special club? Sacrifice a goat at midnight?

  7. About the first question, the vlogs are currently losing, but I just wanted to tell you I really like watching your hauls 🙂 It’s fun to see the blogger behind the blog.

I’m planning to maybe branch out into other kinds of vlogs. I just filmed one actually. Hopefully I will edit and post it on Saturday. We’ll see if people like the new feature.
