Cover Snark (102): The One with the Tentacled Zombie

Welcome to Cover Snark, where the people are snarky and the covers quiver in fear. Since I don’t write many snarky book reviews here on A Reader of Fictions, Cover Snark is my outlet. If you click on the title of the book, where possible, I’ve linked to Goodreads. Clicking on the cover itself will show you the cover in a larger size, in most cases. Feel free to love covers I hate and vice versa. Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

Shiny and New:

1. Invisible (The Twixt #2) – Dawn Metcalf
Invisible (The Twixt #2) - Dawn Metcalf
Thoughts: A horsey stamp of approval. Neigggghhhhh! (not to be confused with “nay”)

2. Blue Lily, Lily Blue (Raven Cycle #3) – Maggie Stiefvater
Blue Lily, Lily Blue (Raven Cycle #3) - Maggie Stiefvater
Thoughts: This art is awesome. I’m oddly reminded of Lord of the Flies.

3. Coral & Bone – Tiffany Daune
Coral & Bone - Tiffany Daune
Thoughts: This is more hilarious than creepy. Very Tim Burton-y. The best touch is the skeleton hand as a hair piece. The worst touch is her singular smoke eyebrow. They’ve taken smoky eyes one step too far.

4. The Long Haul (Diary of a Wimpy Kid #9) – Jeff Kinney
The Long Haul (Diary of a Wimpy Kid #9) - Jeff Kinney
Thoughts: Wow, a long car trip with a suitcase balanced on your head and a flat tire. This both sucks AND blows.

5. Into the Grey – Celine Kiernan
Into the Grey - Celine Kiernan
Thoughts: What a heady experience looking at this cover is.

6. The Scarlets (Asylum) – Madeleine Roux
The Scarlets - Madeleine Roux
Thoughts: Not sure if this pretty cover is skullduggery, but I like it.

7. Love Is a Choice (Across the Universe) – Beth Revis
Love Is a Choice (Across the Universe) - Beth Revis
Thoughts: How is this series not over? Please tell me Beth Revis will be writing something NOT set in this world at some point.

8. Opposition (Lux #5) – Jennifer L. Armentrout
Opposition - Jennifer L. Armentrout
Thoughts: I am so sick of seeing this dude on covers, even if this is the series I associate him with most. Nope, I’m done with you and your greasy hair. Off (the cover) with his head!

9. Infected – Sophie Littlefield
Infected - Sophie Littlefield
Thoughts: Oooh, a blurb talking about a girl saving a boy. That doesn’t happen often. Apparently she will save him with numbers in the sky. They have a healing affect. Oddly enough, so do sickly green cities.

10. The Paper Magician – Charlie N. Holmberg
The Paper Magician - Charlie N. Holmberg
Thoughts: And then the giant piece of paper fell out of the sky, crushing the dancing girl.

11. Whisper the Dead (The Lovegrove Legacy #2) – Alyxandra Harvey
Whisper the Dead (The Lovegrove Legacy #2) - Alexandra Harvey
Thoughts: I am whisper yelling about how boring this cover is.

12. The Witch With No Name (The Hollows #13) – Kim Harrison
The Witch With No Name (The Hollows #13) - Kim Harrison
Thoughts: I’ve been through the desert on a witch with no name. It felt good to be out of the rain. In the desert, you can remember your name, cause the witch won’t let no one give you no pain.

13. The Slow Regard of Silent Things (The Kingkiller Chronicle #2.5) – Patrick Rothfuss
The Slow Regard of Silent Things (The Kingkiller Chronicle #2.5) - Patrick Rothfuss
Thoughts: I am slowly regarding this stairwell. I do not have a great regard for this stairwell.

14. A Vision of Fire – Gillian Anderson & Jeff Rovin
A Vision of Fire by Gillian Anderson & Jeff Rovin
Thoughts: Mulder didn’t want to get in on this?

15. Company Town – Madeline Ashby
Company Town - Madeline Ashby
Thoughts: I am coming alive after a series of really boring covers. WELL CONSTRUCTED.

16. Things Half in Shadow – Alan Finn
Things Half in Shadow - Alan Finn
Thoughts: There’s things half in shadow. And half way in light.

17. Crane (Legends Saga #1) – Stacey Rourke
Crane - Stacey Rourke
Thoughts: Is this about the Joker’s daughter?

18. Just One Night (Just One Day #2.5) – Gayle Forman
Just One Night (Just One Day #2.5) - Gayle Forman
Thoughts: Oh look, kissing while a bird watches. A spin on birdwatching.

19. Cut Me Free – J.R. Johansson
Cut Me Free - J.R. Johansson
Thoughts: The starkness of this is nice and creepy, but I’m trying to figure out what’s going on. Has their stalker trapped them in a bathroom stall or something?

20. To Have and to Harm (Remedy #2) – Debra Doxer
To Have and to Harm - Debra Doxer
Thoughts: OMG, nooooo. This title is so upsetting. Get a divorce, please.

21. Cities and Thrones (The Buried Life #2) – Carrie Patel
Cities and Thrones - Carrie Patel
Thoughts: Strange Chemistry has seriously stepped up its cover game lately. Though those flames are horrid, even on the scale of fake fire fails.

22. Grimm Memories (Grimm Tales #2) – Janna Jennings
Grimm Memories - Janna Jennings
Thoughts: I would very much like a tour of this tree house.

23. How to Outswim a Shark Without a Snorkel – Jess Keating
How to Outswim a Shark Without a Snorkel - Jess Keating
Thoughts: Yeah, my money’s on the shark.

24. The Colour of Magic (Discworld #1) – Terry Pratchett
The Colour of Magic (Discworld #1) - Terry Pratchett
Thoughts: Cuuuuuute, but not really what I want from Discworld.

25. The Light Fantastic (Discworld #2) – Terry Pratchett
The Light Fantastic (Discworld #2) - Terry Pratchett
Thoughts: I like the turtle. For being orange and green (not an obvious color combo), this isn’t so bad.

Cover Battles:

1. Heir of Fire (Throne of Glass #3) – Sarah J. Maas

Heir of Fire (Throne of Glass #3) - Sarah J. Maas
Heir of Fire (Throne of Glass #3) - Sarah J. Maas US

UK vs. US: These covers are so pretty. I honestly can’t decide if I like the white or the green. I NEED BOTH.

2. Reckoning (Silver Blackthorn #1) – Kerry Wilkinson

Reckoning (Silver Blackthorn #1) - Kerry Wilkinson
Reckoning (Silver Blackthorn #1) - Kerry Wilkinson

US vs. UK: These covers are so paranormal. The US says YA paranormal; the UK says adult urban fantasy.

3. The Fire Artist – Daisy Whitney

The Fire Artist - Daisy Whitney
The Fire Artist - Daisy Whitney

Take 1 vs. Take 2: Now she produces flames from her eyelashes instead of her hands. WHAT A USEFUL POWER.

WTF of the Week:

WTF of the Week began as a special category for one cover I saw, but was so popular it became a recurring feature. Here, I highlight covers, both new and old, that I’ve found, which, upon viewing, made me either snort or say something along the lines of “Dear God, what is that thing?” If you would like to be part of the fun and have spotted a truly hilarious or horrifying cover, submit it and your snark to and you might be included, though I will filter through submissions and limit the number of entries per week.

1. Slimy Underbelly (Dan Shamble, Zombie P.I. #4) – Kevin J. Anderson
Slimy Underbelly (Dan Shamble, Zombie P.I.) - Kevin J. Anderson
Thoughts: Okay, so he’s a zombie, but WHY THE TENTACLES? ZOMBIECLES.

2. A Beautiful Rock (Beautiful #4) – Lilliana Anderson
A Beautiful Rock (Beautiful #4) - Lilliana Anderson
Thoughts: Hey girl, how do you like the 14K diamond in my penis piercing? Nice rock, right?

3. The Wild Side – R.K. Lilley

Outstanding Cover of the Week:

Blue Lily, Lily Blue

The Outstanding Cover of the Week is chosen by a Cover Snark reader. They are free to pick any of the week’s covers, whether they’re to my personal tastes or not. If you’d like to choose the cover for a week, either email or tweet me. You will need to be available Wednesday evening to consult.

Blue Lily, Lily Blue (Raven Cycle #3) - Maggie Stiefvater

Today, welcome Shae (Shae Has Left the Room), who has selected Blue Lily, Lily Blue by Maggie Stiefvater. Here’s why:

“Gosh, this was a hard one. I really liked several covers, but there’s no beating Blue Lily, Lily Blue for me. The art style goes beautifully with the other covers (always important), the colors are so lush and vibrant, and the fairy forest flowers are perfectly Cabeswater-esque. I’ll even forgive it for the lack of blue.”

  1. It’s a been a little bit of a disappointing week this week on cover releases hasn’t it, however, I do like the covers for Infected and Crane, they’re really different and I think they look pretty fab. I actually quite like the UK style of the Throne of Glass covers, I think the white background makes Celaena stand out more and I think the subtleness in the back covers as well with the poses is amazing. I’m so trying this series soon!

I haven’t even read The LUX series yet and I’m already sick of seeing his FACE – or half of it EVERY where. Can’t the author ask for a different perspective of him?! Sigh. Great post though!

    17. Fuuuuuuuuu that cover may give me nightmares just because of the flowers on her evil eyes

2 – I totally thought Lord of the Flies-esque also. I really hope that theme doesn’t carry into the story.

12 – oh my gosh that song! so perfect. And also now it’s stuck in my head, thanks for that.

The thing about the US Heir of Fire cover is it’s the wrong green, isn’t it? I mean, green is awesome so I never thought anything could be the wrong green, but it looks wrong against her skirt/sash thing to me. Maybe I’m crazy.

Honestly, I’m just thrilled it matches the first two in the series!

I swear, it’s like there is a competition with who can make THE MOST out outrageous covers.

But I love the cover for Invisible,

#8, I am over Pepe. yes, I know his name. >.<

#20 The title actually works, considering what the series is about. It's odd, but yeah.

WTF #2, at least they aren't kissing.

  8. Angie F. says:

    2. I love the colors!

    6. I really like this one!

    8. I hate these new covers, but I guess I’m glad it’s the same guy.

    19. I was trying really hard to figure out what that was, and then I read your comment. Duh! But…what?

    1. I like how she pops more on the UK cover, but I love the green background on the US…I’ll go with UK, but barely.

    2. Woah, I thought the same thing before reading your comment! Weird.

    3. I do like Take 2…

    1. Tentacles make everything more interesting.

    2. Everything about this is awkward…

    3. I actually like this. It’s so weird and colorful and bright! Totally my thing.

    5. OOH I LIKE. Bullseye indeed.

    6. This one is pretty boneheaded.

    12. Ear wormmmm

    14. Wow that is my name in very very big letters

    16. I would really love this if, um, something were actually half in shadow. Or in any shadow at all.

    20. Oh that gives me nightmares

    21. AMAZING ART.

    22. That is some terrible fontage.

CB1. JUST GIVE ME BOTH PLEASE. I love the turquoise of the UK version and the glowy emerald of the US and both both bothhhh

CB3. These are so dreadfully unfortunate.

WTF1. So THIS is how that butt tentacle cover happened. I see.

WTF2. Totally thought that said Rack because it’s over hers. So many silly euphemisms happening here.

    2. So funny you say that because it also reminded me of that Lord of the Flies cover. Freaking love those colors though!
    14. Serious. Scully and Mulder totally should have teamed up and wrote a book. He’s playing a writer on his current show, come on, that would have been perfect.
    15. Illustrated covers win at everything.
    20. Gah. So much wrong.
    22. Why would you ever use anything close to Comic Sans as your title font. Why.

    1. *barf* Why is there a ginormous fucking hole in his head?
    3. Sucking on glo sticks is bad.

That’d be my pick for cover of the week too although Company Town is a close second.
