Cover Snark (97): The One with the Adorable Snowman

Welcome to Cover Snark, where the people are snarky and the covers quiver in fear. Since I don’t write many snarky book reviews here on A Reader of Fictions, Cover Snark is my outlet. If you click on the title of the book, where possible, I’ve linked to Goodreads. Clicking on the cover itself will show you the cover in a larger size, in most cases. Feel free to love covers I hate and vice versa. Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

Shiny and New:

1. The Infinite Sea (The 5th Wave #2) – Rick Yancey
The Infinite Sea - Rick Yancey
Thoughts: And then a shark busts out of the water and eats that guy. I’ve totally seen this movie before.

2. Not in the Script – Amy Finnegan
Not in the Script - Amy Finnegan
Thoughts: This combination of drawn background and real models still isn’t working for me. Neither are his douchey sunglasses.

3. The Stepsister’s Tale – Tracy Barrett
The Stepsister's Tale - Tracy Barrett
Thoughts: I am underwhelmed. Mostly I wish there was more of a focus on the dresses than the faces. Meh.

4. Stardawn (Starglass #0.5) – Phoebe North
Stardawn - Phoebe North
Thoughts: I was just stoking my rage fires at another redesign when I realized this was a prequel. All is well. For a novella, this is quite nice, but I do love me some space covers.

5. I Know Lucy (Fugitive #1) – Melissa Pearl
I Know Lucy - Melissa Pearl
Thoughts: Well, you might KNOW Lucy, but I LOVE her, so I win. HA.

6. Gypsy (The Cavy Files #1) – Trisha Leigh
Gypsy (The Cavy Files) - Trisha Leigh
Thoughts: So, she’s in a pretty, white dress in a creepy graveyard before what looks to be a big storm and there’s a creepy dark figure on the walkway behind her. Something tells me her survival skills need work.

7. The Scandalous Sisterhood of Prickwillow Place – Julie Berry
The Scandalous Sisterhood of Prickwillow Place - Julie Berry
Thoughts: PRICKWILLOW. Bahahahaha. I am five, so I’ll be laughing at this for a long time, so you might want to move on along.

8. The Best Things in Death (The Memory Chronicles #1.5) – Lenore Appelhans
The Best Things in Death (The Memory Chronicles #1.5) - Lenore Appelhans
Thoughts: The Best Things in Death is an ironic title for short stories about flashbacks to life. Proposed new title: the black and white things in death.

9. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (Harry Potter #1) – J.K. Rowling
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Harry Potter #1) - J.K. Rowling
Thoughts: So apparently there aren’t enough covers for HP yet. This one’s not bad, but I’m really happy with my pretty US redesigns. I don’t really know why but Harry kind of looks like a girl to me on this cover. And Hagrid’s beard is too neat.

10. The Vault (The Farm #3) – Emily McKay
The Vault (The Farm #3) - Emily McKay
Thoughts: Themes of survival do not make a book The fucking Hunger Games. Stop with this shit. Also, I can see up her nose. And I do not care for the finish like the book had a sunburn and now it’s peeling.

11. Belzhar – Meg Wolitzer
Belzhar - Meg Wolitzer
Thoughts: Well, this person’s really organized, but that seems like a really random collection of things. Like, this is where I keep my Plath, my shoes, my headphones, my pens and my spoon, because obviously.

12. Fire Fall (Dark Star #3) – Bethany Frenette
Fire Fall (Dark Star #3) - Bethany Frenette
Thoughts: Oooh, so pretty. Though I wonder if it’s another redesign, since this one doesn’t have a model. Though, for the record, I like this more than a model cover.

13. The Bloodbound – Erin Lindsey
The Bloodbound - Erin Lindsey
Thoughts: Everything makes me want to have my hair braided. Why can’t I have nice hair?

14. Beginnings: Obsidian & Onyx (Lux #1-2) – Jennifer L. Armentrout
Beginnings - Jennifer L. Armentrout
Thoughts: Oooh, the omnibus doesn’t have that modeling team. Not sure why this girl is naked when it’s apparently cold upside or why someone’s upside down, but I still like this better than the covers or the individual books…maybe? O_o

15. The Savages (The Savages #1) – Matt Whyman
The Savages - Matt Whyman
Thoughts: Terrifying and hilarious but mostly terrifying. Or, wait, I just noticed the wallpaper and I’m leaning back towards hilarious. Gah.

16. Chocolate Dreams at the Gingerbread Cafe – Rebecca Raisin
Chocolate Dreams at the Gingerbread Cafe - Rebecca Raisin
Thoughts: I feel bad for the gingerbread, not wanted at its own cafe.

17. Medusa – Tony Talbot
Medusa - Tony Talbot
Thoughts: Pretty pink and purple planet. Say that five times fast.

18. Eternal Night – Carina Adly Mackenzie
Eternal Night - Carina Adly Mackenzie
Thoughts: There may be gods among us, but this person in fake wings is not one of them.

19. Black Widow (Elemental Assassin #12) – Jennifer Estep
Black Widow (Elemental Assassin) - Jennifer Estep
Thoughts: She’s so sneaky. Applying misdirection, like Siegfried and Roy. She’s all “oh see, I don’t have my knife out” but then her left hand is all “heh heh, time for stabbing!”

20. Black Dog (Hellhound Chronicles) – Caitlin Kittredge
Black Dog (Hellhound Chronicles) - Caitlin Kittredge
Thoughts: She has mastered the fine art of shadow puppets.

21. The Boyfriend Thief – Shana Norris
The Boyfriend Thief - Shana Norris
Thoughts: Hide yo binders, hide yo boyfriend.

22. Black Rook (Cornerstone Run Trilogy #1) – Kelly Meade
Black Rook (Cornerstone Run Trilogy #1) - Kelly Meade
Thoughts: Isn’t black the normal color for rooks to be? And also that’s a wolf, not a rook. Trust me, I’m good with animals.

23. Dollhouse (Dollhouse #1) – Anya Allyn
Dollhouse - Anya Allyn
Thoughts: Me, looking at this cover: Oooh, pretty color and font and oh I think I love this. Look at the horses. OH MY FUCKING GOD DOLL HEADS. NOPE NOPE NOPE. GOOD DAY, SIR.

24. Revealed (The Missing #7) – Margaret Peterson Haddix
Revealed (The Missing #7) by Margaret Peterson Haddix
Thoughts: Apparently they’re rewriting the past to fly a plane into the Eiffel Tower. They must be tired of seeing it on book covers. That’s ironic.

25. Look After You – Elena Matthews
Look After You - Elena Matthews
Thoughts: Whoever is looking after her is not doing a good enough job. Or she forgot to bring her yoga mat with her to yoga in the park. Honestly, it could go either way.

26. Dangerous Deceptions (Palace of Spies #2) – Sarah Zettel
Dangerous Deceptions (Palace of Spies #2) - Sarah Zettel
Thoughts: I feel like this would be okay, if her facial expression wasn’t aggressively bored.

27. Prophecy of the Most Beautiful (Oracle of Delphi #1) – Diantha Jones
Prophecy of the Most Beautiful - Diantha Jones
Thoughts: She either doesn’t have arms or they’re not in the usual location for arms. The standards for beauty WERE different in Ancient Greece, but…

28. Sharing You (Sharing You #1) – Molly McAdams
Sharing You - Molly McAdams
Thoughts: As long as I don’t get a portion, I don’t care who shares.

29. The Resurrection of Aubrey Miller – L.B. Simmons
The Resurrection of Aubrey Miller - L.B. Simmons
Thoughts: Looks more like she becomes a dark, oily water.

30. Glory (The Dust Chronicles #3) – Maureen McGowan
Glory (The Dust Chronicles #3) - Maureen McGowan
Thoughts: Ooooh, I am glorying in this. However, I didn’t recognize the series because this looks nothing like the other two books. NOTHING. It looks better, but still whuuut.

Cover Battles:

1. Unteachable – Leah Raeder

Unteachable - Leah Raeder
Unteachable - Leah Raeder

Self-Pub vs. Atria: You know what, for as awesome as the self-pub design is, I expected to hate Atria’s cover, but this actually isn’t bad. Reminds me a bit of the US cover for Transparent, only better. However, I still prefer the simplicity and surprise face-iness of the first cover.

2. The Eye of Minds (The Mortality Doctrine #1) – James Dashner

The Eye of Minds (The Mortality Doctrine #1) - James Dashner Hardback
The Eye of Minds (The Mortality Doctrine #1) - James Dashner

US Hardback vs. US Paperback: The new one looks a little bit better I guess, but mostly I just don’t care one way or the other. Mostly I’ve realized how much I hate that little walking dude and his shadow, no matter how close he is.

3. The Ruining – Anna Collomore

The Ruining - Anna Collomore hardback
The Ruining - Anna Collomore

US Hardback vs. US Paperback: Oooh, this cover model kind of looks like Brooke Davis, but still not loving it.

4. Midnight Crossroad (Midnight, Texas #1) – Charlaine Harris

Midnight Crossroad - Charlaine Harris take 1
Midnight Crossroad - Charlaine Harris

US vs. UK: Well, that’s a different cover concept. UK all the way, I say. Pretty blue, rather than making me feel dizzy and blurry.

5. Sinner (The Wolves of Mercy Falls #4) – Maggie Stiefvater

Sinner - Maggie Stiefvater
Sinner - Maggie Stiefvater

US vs. UK: Apparently orange is the color of sin. I really wouldn’t have called that one.

WTF of the Week:

WTF of the Week began as a special category for one cover I saw, but was so popular it became a recurring feature. Here, I highlight covers, both new and old, that I’ve found, which, upon viewing, made me either snort or say something along the lines of “Dear God, what is that thing?” If you would like to be part of the fun and have spotted a truly hilarious or horrifying cover, submit it and your snark to and you might be included, though I will filter through submissions and limit the number of entries per week.

1. The Elephant of Surprise (The Russel Middlebrook Series #4) – Brent Hartinger
The Elephant of Surprise (The Russel Middlebrook Series #4) - Brent Hartinger
Thoughts: I truly don’t want to know.

2. Butt Pirates in Space
Butt Pirates in Space
Thoughts: Somebody really went there.

3. The Adorable Snowman – Stephanie Burke
The Adorable Snowman - Stephanie Burke
Thoughts: YOU are welcome.

Outstanding Cover of the Week:

The Savages

The Outstanding Cover of the Week is chosen by a Cover Snark reader. They are free to pick any of the week’s covers, whether they’re to my personal tastes or not. If you’d like to choose the cover for a week, either email or tweet me. You will need to be available Wednesday evening to consult.

The Savages - Matt Whyman

Today, welcome Shelly (Read Sleep Repeat), who has selected The Savages by Matt Whyman. Here’s why:

“This cover is not something I typically see and I LOVE IT. Although it looks a little creepy, it still looks very hilarious. I love the angsty teenager rolling her eyes in the front of the picture (she definitely has the same look I have on my face in family pictures) and the rest of the family looks creepy enough that it almost seems mocking (but in a hilarious way). The cover definitely matches the synopsis and I guess that’s what I love the most. Also, IT IS ILLUSTRATED. Illustrated covers automatically get 10+ points for awesomeness.”

  1. Ooooo I haven’t Cover Snarked for AGES.

    2. Looks half-finished. Need some pencils/crayons to colour it in.

    3. Yeah, I’m guessing they have NO love for each other. Dark haired girl scares me.

    4. How are there leaves in space? Man, they those leaves get around.

    5. Get the girl a brush, stat.

    6. Disappoint! I loved her last series covers. *sad*

    7. Prickwillow *giggles*

    8. Simplicity, how I love thee. And the polka dots. Love.

    10. Someone needs a serious moisturiser. And another hairbrush.

    15. Creeeeeeeeepy. Except the baby is not creepified. Maybe that’s against some kinda rules.

    18. Wonky wings. Angels after a few Friday night beverages perhaps.

    21. Is he an elf? His ear is either huge or he has hair wings.

    23. Doll heads? There are fucking SNAKES!

    28. He’s all yours ladies. His eyes creep me out.

    29. This is familiar…very familiar…but I can’t be arsed finding the other book with this face/pose.

I got so caught up in voting that I forgot to comment on CBs. But voting = yay.

WTF1. That’s going to be one hell of a surprise….

WTF2. Total kudos for going there. Go big or go home (or no).

    WTF3. Speechless. Completely.

      2. Yeah, I get what they’re going for, but it’s soooo not panning out.

      4. I don’t really get that either, but it looks cool, so I’m suspending my disbelief. Maybe the glass of the ship is just really clear and they have a good camera?

      6. Same. This cover is so stereotypically paranormal, and not outstanding even for that.

      7. Yesssss. I’m glad I’m not the only one.

      8. 🙂

      10. Hairbrushes to all the cover models!

      15. It doesn’t need to be creepified. Babies are inherently creepy.

      21. HAIR WINGS.

      23. Not as bothered by the snakes to be honest.

      28. His everything creeps me out. I feel like he’s going to force me to watch wrestling or boxing or NASCAR. Which no.

      29. It’s similar to Through to You, but that’s not identical, I don’t think.

      WTF3. It’s a really good one. 😀

  2. 5. This just looks like Panic, but with dark hair.

    7. Love it!

    9. I REALLY don’t like this new cover. The style just doesn’t work for me. I didn’t realize how lucky we were with the new Scholastic ones.

    15. WOAH someone stepped up their game. This looks like a modern day Adam’s Family!

    23. EEEK double creepy doll heads, and EEK snakes!

    25. Went to click on this, then saw “He’ll save her… when nobody else can” and went NOPE xEXIT

      5. That it does. I’ll never understand why so many covers look like this. Cover designers, it’s NOT INTERESTING.

      9. It’s not HORRID, but it’s not very good either.

      25. Yeah, based on the tagline, I would hate it, but the cover amused me.

  3. I’m pretty sure Fire Fall is just a temporary cover at the moment, at least, that’s what I heard, but it’s still beautiful in it’s own right. I love that it shows the two sides of the world, the normal and the Beneath, so that’s great. I have to say, I do like that new Harry Potter cover though, I like the style, even if Harry does look like a girl. The savages looks amazing! I’m loving that the little boy is holding a severed hand, and I actually really like the bold colours, it’s great, sounds amazing too. You should take up tongue twisters too Christina, that Pretty Pink and Purple Planet was pretty good. Some really exciting covers this week, and I really like the new cover for Unteachable too, makes me want to get it for my collection sooner 😀

Well, Disney actually puts the Cover Not Final on the covers before they’re final, though some publishers do not. I’ve avoided this one for about a month already because of that label, but it’s gone now and up on Amazon, so it seemed official enough to go ahead. Doesn’t mean it’s not still being worked on, but I think I’ve got enough reason to use it. Anyway, I love it, so I hope it’s final.

Did not notice the severed hand. O_O

  4. Annie says:

The Ruining – Anna Collomore – She totally does look like Brooke Davis but in a Jennifer Connelly movie. It looks far too creepy for my tastes.

  5. 2. There is too much going on. It’s like they slammed 3 different covers together.
    3. Disappointing 🙁 It doesn’t scream ‘fairy tale’ enough.
    7. Despite the name, I really like these type of covers.
    9. I’d buy these books for the extra Pottermore information, but I love the other redesigns from Scholastic too much.
    10. This series get the most horrible covers.. Such a shame, because I remember liking the first book.
    13. Nice, I like how feisty she looks.
    28. Haha, the look on his face. Is that his smolder look, because it’s not nearly as charming as Flynn Rider’s look.
    30. That is SO much better than the other two books in this series.

    2. Butt pirates in space… and when I thought it couldn’t get worse I scrolled down and saw something even more terrifying.

      3. Really doesn’t. It screams bad historical fiction. I’m expecting The Luxe or something similar, not a fairy tale.

      7. I kind of love the name, because it makes me giggle.

      9. I don’t like this one much. Mostly it’s the font I think. They can’t afford better?

      10. The second book was good too, even though I was terrified it wouldn’t be. The series is being cheated on covers.

      13. She’s kinda raising her eyebrow and daring you to take her on.

      28. Not remotely. Looks more like he’s spacing out after he had too much Bud to me.

      2. Heh heh heh.

  6. Judith says:

    2. Dude, those glasses were not in the script. Where did you even find them?

    3. This could be a Bloodlines book. (Aka NOPE.)

    5. *snorts*

    7. *pets illustrated cover*

    9. It’s a shame they released this after the stunningly beautiful new US covers, but who cares. I MUST HAS.

    11. I bet she reads this blog.

    13. Let’s start a club. People who want nice hair but can’t have nice hair because the universe is cruel.

    15. I love this. It’s creepy and awesome. She totally looks like Violet from The Incredibles.

    17. I’m vair confused as to why this is called Medusa. WHERE ARE THE SNAKES?

    18. Pssssst. Your wings are askew.

    21. Hahahaha.

    28. From the expression on their faces, they obviously don’t want to share. Too bad, kids. Sharing is caring.

CB1. The first is more unique and I love it.

CB5. Watch it. Orange happens to be our national color.

    WTF1. Sigh college parties.

    WTF3. One question: WHY?!?!

    • Christina Franke says:

    2. Yeah, I’m not sure about this line of covers.

    3. She looks a bit like a young Adele Nazim.

    7. This looks like fun but OMG PRICKWILLOW HONESTLY

    9. I do prefer the US paperback redesigns but i still want this with all my soul

    10. Get thineself some moisturizer.

    22. “Trust me, I’m good with animals.” HAHAHAHA

    23. Sooo pretty but OH MY FUCKING GOD SO TERRIFYING

    25. *dies laughing*

    26. Wait, WHAT? Did they redesign this BACK? This looks like my ARC cover of the first one, but NOT like its finished cover! Gillian confused.

    30. GORGEOUOS.

CB1. I actually prefer the Atria cover, but these are both cool.

CB3. No. (She does kinda look like Brooke Davis.)

      7. I keep trying to come up with something to say besides OMG Prickwillow, but nope. So distracting with its prickwillow in my face.

      11. Noooo, I liked the one book I read by this author, but JAM. Joey would love it, though.

      12. If they make redesigns that look like this, I will be glad I haven’t bought them yet because soooo pretty.

      26. Don’t know. This was on Amazon. *shrugs* They might put up something new. I don’t know what pubs are doing anymore.

CB3. Brooke Davis after some hard living.

CB4. Debby was thrilled about this obviously. I DIDN’T DETERMINE THIS.

    9. Seriously though, why the abundant amount of new covers for this series lately? Harry totally does look like a girl. It’s all that volume he’s got going on.
    10. Girl needs some lotion or something.
    15. I love this. Totally reminds me of a Goosebumps cover.
    23. Wow that’s a WAY better cover than the original. I picked this up as a freebie forever ago and it has some girl in a pretty dress. This cover actually makes me want to read it now.

Butt… Pirates… In Space? They look like mutilated Sims or something. And I think his unitard might be cutting off circulation to some vital parts.

The Adorable Snowman. My one question: what was that cover artist smoking? I keep looking at it and cannot stop laughing I have TEARS everywhere ohmygod why would someone put that into the world. I think I’m going to have nightmares

    2. Truthfully I love the cover of this one and the others in the line a lot! And I think that they’ll get picked up and looked at, at libraries and bookstores because of them, I know I would! 🙂

    3. I like it (The font’s pretty!), but I don’t think the image and the font go together that well? Or maybe the title needs to be moved and made bigger?

    4. Eh.

    6. I like her dress, but that background does not go with it. At all. I like the way the font looks at the bottom, it reminds me a little bit of the way the font looks on Cinders & Sapphires by Leila Rasheed! 🙂

    9. I haven’t read Harry Potter and am not able to talk about how well it fits the book, but I like it! I like the new US ones better, though! (I like the stars around the top, though!)

    11. I like this one a lot! the black and white with just the pop of yellow looks good! 🙂

    12. This reminds me more of a novella cover than a regular one, but I love the colors used on it! And the background on it is neat! I just don’t like the bottom of it.

    13. I like the way the flag (I think.) looks behind her and I like the way her hair and everything looks, too! But something about it is just not working for me overall, I don’t know what.

    16. The idea of the cover is pretty and I like the colors used on it! 🙂

    17. Again, I love the colors used on it! 🙂

    21. I love the brightness of it and it’s fun looking, but I like the original one a little better! 🙂

    26. Not bad, but her arm doesn’t look very well photoshopped into it, looks weird to me. But it’s not bad besides that! 🙂

    3. This better be adult lit, because wow they look old. And boring. Old and boring.

    5. I can’t be the only one reading this in the voice in Joe Junior from While You Were Sleeping.

    7. They did say it was a scandalous sisterhood.

    9. It’s the pointy chin, I think. But is it just me or does Hermoine’s hair look like Emma Watson’s hair? Isn’t it supposed to be messy? (Asks the newbie.)

    15. I am SO intrigued. It’s like The Incredibles meet the Addams Family.

    23. I’m pleased you have no problems with the snakes.

    25. She is touching her forehead to asphalt. That makes me want to scrub my forehead.

    26. Ughhhhh. I love these books so much and hate these covers SO MUCH.

    27. They’re there. She’s just all twisted in that bed sheet shawl thing.

    15. I quite like this.

    1. I really like both, but maybe Atria’s.

    3. Hardcover.

    4. UK! Now I’m actually kind of interested.

    1. The literal elephant in the room…at a party…

    2. I feel like I need to add this to my collection of strange books.

    3. What?! o_O

  16. 1. That’s not a very infinite sea. It’s more like a pond created by heavy rain. It almost reminds me of what the porch at home looks like after a storm.

    6. *grumbles about the title being a racial slur*

    8. This cover makes me sad because there is nothing to it. 🙁 Where is the effort?

    12. At least if it is another redesign, it will go well with the hardcovers of Dark Star and Burn Bright. I like that the redesign between books one and two was minimal so they wouldn’t look too different. Just tweaked.

    14. FALSE ADVERTISING. This looks like dark serious business. It ain’t.

    26. Bleeeeeeh. So bland.

    28. Jesus Christ, do all of her books have to look like they’re about people cheating? I think only one or two don’t and they’re probably about cheating anyway. Also, if there’s talk of sharing, I demand a polyamorous relationship here.

    1. Both are nice, but I prefer the more subtle colors of the self-pub and the way the black highlights them. The Artia cover is just punching me in the face.

    5. But I thought green was Satan’s favorite color! (Or maybe it was purple. I can’t find the silly color wank I got that from and can’t remember clearly. Preeeetty sure Harry Potter was somehow involved.) (…Ten minutes later, I return having found the page and I was right. Green IS Satan’s favorite color and Harry Potter did it.)

    3. Anna wanted to build a very different kind of snowman. Maybe the gifs on Tumblr that rewrite her song along the lines of “do you want to hide a body?” are the actual song and Disney is lying to us again.

  17. Lyn Kaye says:

    13. LOVE the cover! I never get tired of redheads on covers (guilty confession here),

    Slow week. 🙁
