Cover Snark (94): The One with My Little Pony Romance

Welcome to Cover Snark, where the people are snarky and the covers quiver in fear. Since I don’t write many snarky book reviews here on A Reader of Fictions, Cover Snark is my outlet. If you click on the title of the book, where possible, I’ve linked to Goodreads. Clicking on the cover itself will show you the cover in a larger size, in most cases. Feel free to love covers I hate and vice versa. Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

Shiny and New:

1. Prudence (The Custard Protocol #1) – Gail Carriger
Prudence (The Custard Protocol #1) - Gail Carriger
Thoughts: Mmmm, custard. I’m hungry. Oh right, also, I love everything but the hot pink title.

2. Eternal Dawn (The Vampire Queen #3) – Rebecca Maizel
Eternal Dawn (The Vampire Queen #3) - Rebecca Maizel
Thoughts: Logistical problems inherent in your heart beating only for another person: 1) If they die, whoops. 2) If they leave you, oh shit. Embrace codependency. 3) Do they have to be close by? HOW close?

3. Mortal Danger (Immortal Game #1) – Ann Aguirre
Mortal Danger - Ann Aguirre
Thoughts: Ooooh, simple, classy, old-fashioned, with an ounce of eeriness. Christina approves.

4. Lucky Day (Jasper Dent #0.1) – Barry Lyga
Lucky Day – Barry Lyga
Thoughts: Clearly, Barry Lyga has a different definition of lucky than I do. Mine involves no policemen and no blood.

5. Red Blooded (Jessica McClain #4) – Amanda Carlson
Red Blooded (Jessica McClain #4) - Amanda Carlson
Thoughts: Is that an ocean of lava behind her? IS THE FLOOR ALSO LAVA?

6. Drowned (Drowned #1) – Nichola Reilly
Drowned (Drowned #1) - Nichola Reilly
Thoughts: Certainly, Jack can’t escape the rising tides. Of course, that’s because she let go.

7. Robogenesis – Daniel H. Wilson
Robogenesis - Daniel H. Wilson
Thoughts: This cover is so high res that I can tell that the robot has a light fur, and this freaks me out beyond measure.

8. Symbiont (Parasitology #2) – Mira Grant
Symbiont (Parasitology #2) - Mira Grant
Thoughts: Um. This is science, so I actually have nothing to say bc I don’t know wtf is happening. I AM BOOKISH, NOT SCIENCISH.

9. Rush Too Far (Rosemary Beach #1.1) – Abbi Glines
Rush Too Far (Rosemary Beach #1.1) - Abbi Glines
Thoughts: Angel wings go on your back, dude. Or, even better, they don’t go at all. Also, you’ve got a little something on your chin. Maybe you should wipe that off.

10. How to Seduce a Band Geek (How To #2) – Cassie Mae
How to Seduce a Band Geek - Cassie Mae
Thoughts: Cover: boring. Title: I MUST HAS.

11. How to Hook a Bookworm (How to #3) – Cassie Mae
How to Hook a Book Worm (How to #3) - Cassie Mae
Thoughts: It is interesting to me how much more overtly nerdy this guy is than the band geek. I’m also uncomfortable because he so obviously doesn’t want that kiss.

12. Prejudice Meets Pride – Rachael Anderson
Prejudice Meets Pride - Rachel Anderson
Thoughts: Yeah, the happy grins are really selling the bickery romance.

13. Growing Up Dead – Chelsea M. Campbell
Growing Up Dead - Chelsea M. Campbell
Thoughts: A Deadhead with Bedhead. Rock on, little dude! *holds up iPhone with candle app*

14. Never Forgotten – Kelly Risser
Never Forgotten - Kelly Risser
Thoughts: THIS BITCH AGAIN. WHY IS SHE ON EVERY COVER? NO. NO NO NO. Any cover using this stock photo is an automatic F at this point. Do not pass Go; do not collect $200; proceed straight to the shame corner. Final verdict: immediately forgotten.

15. Falling Into Place – Amy Zhang
Falling Into Place - Amy Zhang
Thoughts: So someone intended for a car to drive off a road? That’s not very nice, even if they did plot the physics of it. But maybe it’s like a Mythbusters thing.

16. Four: A Divergent Story Collection (Divergent #0.1-0.4) – Veronica Roth
Veronica Roth's Divergent companion series -- exclusive image
Thoughts: One choice will free him from the FERRIS WHEEL OF DEATH. Also, this is inexplicably hilarious to me. *wipes tears*

17. Initiate (Divergent #0.2) – Veronica Roth
Veronica Roth's Divergent companion series -- exclusive image

18. The Son (Divergent #0.3) – Veronica Roth
Veronica Roth's Divergent companion series -- exclusive image
Thoughts: What is happening here? Pollution is bad in Chicago.

19. The Traitor (Divergent #0.4) – Veronica Roth
Veronica Roth's Divergent companion series -- exclusive image
Thoughts: I like this cover the best of the bunch. Actually, I think it’s my favorite of the Divergent covers, because I understand why there would be birds in the sky, but not so much a train in a circle.

20. The Walled City – Ryan Graudin
The Walled City - Ryan Graudin
Thoughts: I THINK the model’s actually Asian? But it’s kinda hard to tell. This is interesting, but also really weird, especially with how she’s face down.

21. Contact – Laurisa White Reyes
Contact - Laurisa White Reyes
Thoughts: She doesn’t care if the world ends so long as no one fucks with her record.

22. Winterspell – Claire Legrand
Winterspell - Claire Legrand
Thoughts: Is ginger girls holding their own knives to their throats a cover trend for 2014?… Fantasy bird is here and chilling. Her stole looks like it’s made from a grey poodle. The font is adorable. Marissa Meyer approves.

23. From Gods to Monsters: A Collection of Urban Fantasy & Paranormal Romance Novels
From Gods to Monsters A Collection of Urban Fantasy & Paranormal Romance Novels
Thoughts: Hmmm, I actually think the treatment of the heart is pretty cool, for being an overdone concept. The font for Monsters is too stereotypical though.

24. Dark Futures – Kami Garcia, Melissa Marr & Carrie Ryan
Dark Futures - Kami Garcia, Melissa Marr & Carrie Ryan
Thoughts: Lol at both her dress and the fact that this is an ebook consisting of the stories these authors put into Shards & Ashes. Was that necessary? NO.

25. Anatomy of a Misfit – Andrea Portes
Anatomy of a Misfit - Andrea Portes
Thoughts: Awww, looks like Harper redesigned Say What You Will, because the chairs were needed for this cover.

26. No One Needs to Know – Amanda Grace
No One Needs to Know - Amanda Grace
Thoughts: Oh hey, ladies holding hands. It’s like THIS, but more awesome. Only I’m still not particularly interested because infidelity. But progress of a sort!

27. Mortal Gods (Goddess War #2) – Kendare Blake
Mortal Gods (Goddess War #2) - Kendare Blake
Thoughts: I still really hate the redesigned font, but her braid is awesome and so is the lightning.

28. The Lonely – Ainslie Hogarth
The Lonely - Ainslie Hogarth
Thoughts: Squeak squeak squeaken.

29. Finally, Forever (First Comes Love #3) – Katie Kacvinsky
Finally, Forever (First Comes Love #3) - Katie Kacvinsky
Thoughts: This looks like someone could have made it in MS Paint in about five minutes. Maybe less. Also, the heart out of shoe strings. UGH. I liked one heart cover, so my quota is full up for this week.

30. The Swan & the Jackal (In the Company of Killers #3) – J.A. Redmerski
The Swan & the Jackal (In the Company of Killers #3) - J.A. Redmerski
Thoughts: Okay, so at first I was just like “Dude in a suit. BORing.” Then I noticed the bloody hand and was creeped out. Question: is he holding a disembodied arm or is their a person behind him. Next I noticed the needle and I am out of here, yo.

31. Binary Witness – Rosie Claverton
Binary Witness - Rosie Claverton
Thoughts: BINARY SOLO.

32. Iron & Rust (Throne of the Caesars #1) – Harry Sidebottom
Iron & Rust - Harry Sidebottom
Thoughts: BAHAHAHAHA, SIDEBOTTOM. Okay, so I’m five. But Sidebottom. It gets worse, like that dude Jane Austen was engaged to overnight: Bigg-Wither. In fact, I wonder if they’re distant relations.

33. The Great Vowel Shift – Robin Houghton
Thoughts: I am not on the right drugs to appreciate this cover.

34. Fool’s Assassin (The Fitz and the Fool Trilogy #1) – Robin Hobb
Fool's Assassin - Robin Hobb
Thoughts: That guy has antler’s growing from his lower back. That does make him a fitting assassin for fools, I suppose.

35. It Ain’t Me, Babe – Tillie Cole
It Ain’t Me, Babe - Tillie Cole
Thoughts: No, indeed, Johnny. I’ve seen that movie and it ends poorly.

36. Drawing Amanda – Stephanie Feuer
Drawing Amanda - Stephanie Feuer
Thoughts: This is so meta. I kinda like it, though the hands freak me out.

37. The Golden Apple – Michelle Diener
The Golden Apple - Michelle Diener
Thoughts: BORED. Also, the yellow font to go with the golden apple is an unhappy combination.

38. Child of a Hidden Sea – A.M. Dellamonica
Child of a Hidden Sea - A.M. Dellamonica
Thoughts: The girl looks awesome. I’m a bit weirded out by the dude’s blank stare and pet…whatever that is. Looks sort of like a ferret cat or something.

39. Something Going Around – Harry Turtledove
Something Going Around - Harry Turtledove
Thoughts: Looks like neither that girl or that vehicle will be going around anymore.

40. The Litany of Earth – Ruthanna Emrys
The Litany of Earth - Ruthanna Emrys
Thoughts: What is happening? I see a giant eye, a coiled something, and maybe another eye in the foreground. This is a nightmare. Girl, stop reading and RUN. You know it’s serious business when I’m telling people to stop reading. LISTEN TO ME.

41. What Mario Scietto Says – Emmy Laybourne
What Mario Scietto Says - Emmy Laybourne
Thoughts: “Mfffff Mff mfff.” “What, Mario? I really can’t understand you through your gas mask.”

42. Clariel (Abhorsen #4) – Garth Nix

Thoughts: Is that dragon on a leash? Oh, don’t mind me. Just taking my dragon for a walk.

43. Enlightened (EVE #2) – A. L. Waddington
Enlightened (EVE #2) - A. L. Waddington

44. The Fear Trials (The Murder Complex #0.5) – Lindsay Cummings
The Fear Trials (The Murder Complex #0.5) - Lindsay Cummings
Thoughts: We zoomed in on the face, which is now blue and purple. That’s one heck of an all body bruise.

45. Compulsion (The Heirs of Watson Island #1) – Martina Boone
Compulsion (Heirs of Watson #1) - Martina Boone
Thoughts: With spring coming, I look at this cover and think of this.

46. The Gateway Through Which They Came (The Gateway Series #1) – Heather Marie

Thoughts: Apparently the aliens came through John Hurt’s son or something.

47. Mojave Green (Dimensions in Death #2) – The Brothers Washburn

Thoughts: She’s only MOSTLY dead.

49. Don’t Let Go (PERSEFoNE #3) – Michelle Gagnon
Don't Let Go (PERSEFoNE #3) - Michelle Gagnon
Thoughts: I like the green, but feel bad for jogging girl. Jogging is exhausting. I let go of the desire to exercise. She can too. Oh wait, no, I never had it. Maybe she can’t let go.

50. Firebug (Necromancer #3) – Lish McBride

Thoughts: The healing power of fire. It’s going to be an arsony day. In other news, I would like that ring, please.

Thoughts: PICK ON SOMEBODY YOUR OWN SIZE. Only, you know, not like ME.

52. Golden Son (Red Rising #2) – Pierce Brown
Golden Son (Red Rising #2) - Pierce Brown
Thoughts: I like this, though that might be because of how much this color scheme makes me think of The Hunger Games.

53. Prom and Prejudice (Snark & Circumstance #4) – Stephanie Wardrop
Prom and Prejudice (Snark & Circumstance #4) - Stephanie Wardrop
Thoughts: Wow, he really didn’t shell out money for the flower, did he?

55. Mask of the Swan (The Fearless #2) -Terry Maggert
Mask of the Swan (The Fearless #2) -Terry Maggert
Thoughts: She looks less like a swan and more like a pyro, but whatever you say, cover.

56. Beauty & the Biker (Impossible Dream #1) – Beth Ciotta
Beauty & the Biker - Beth Ciotta
Thoughts: There’s a lot I don’t like, but the most damning bit is the tagline, given that “fairytales” is not a word. A quick google could have verified whether it was one or two words, but alas no.

Cover Battles:

1. Say What You Will – Cammie McGovern

Say What You Will - Cammie McGovern
Say What You Will - Cammie McGovern

Take 1 vs. Take 2: Apparently the chairs aren’t going to fall in love. But, to comfort us the loss of this epic love, we have hand-illustrated cover! I don’t think I’ll chaise long after the cover. Besides, the redesign is in MY BLOG’S COLORS.

2. Earthbound (Earthbound #1) – April Lynne Pike

Earthbound - Aprilynne Pike
Earthbound (Earthbound #1) – April Lynne Pike

US Hardback vs. US Paperback Take 1 vs. US Paperback Take 2: Book two isn’t even out yet and they’ve gone through three designs. Where the designers stop, nobody knows!

3. The Winner’s Curse (The Winner’s Trilogy #1) – Marie Rutkoski

The Winner's Curse - Marie Rutkoski
The Winner's Curse (The Winner's Trilogy #1) – Marie Rutkoski UK

US vs. UK: The changes are minimal, but I think I actually prefer the more muted tones of the US cover. The blue-tinted wood flooring in particular seems off.

4. Crown of Renewal (Paladin’s Legacy #5) – Elizabeth Moon

Crown of Renewal - Elizabeth Moon US
Crown of Renewal - Elizabeth Moon

US vs. UK: It is a battle of the beards. Personally, I think the guy on the UK cover wears the beard of power better.

5. Assassin’s Apprentice (Farseer Trilogy #1) – Robin Hobb

Assassin's Apprentice (Farseer Trilogy #1) - Robin Hobb UK Original
Assassin's Apprentice (Farseer Trilogy #1) - Robin Hobb

UK Original vs. UK Redesign: Honestly, I don’t mind the original cover style, but I am drooling over the new ones. *wonders if she can justify the cost of ordering UK editions*

6. Royal Assassin (Farseer Trilogy #2) – Robin Hobb

Royal Assassin (Farseer Trilogy #2) - Robin Hobb Original UK
Royal Assassin (Farseer Trilogy #2) - Robin Hobb

7. Assassin’s Quest (Farseer Trilogy #3) – Robin Hobb

Assassin's Quest (Farseer Trilogy #3) - Robin Hobb Original UK
Assassin's Quest (Farseer Trilogy #3) - Robin Hobb

UK Original vs. UK Redesign: Now I am torn. See, I like the green, but the blue dragon is so cuuuute.

WTF of the Week:

WTF of the Week began as a special category for one cover I saw, but was so popular it became a recurring feature. Here, I highlight covers, both new and old, that I’ve found, which, upon viewing, made me either snort or say something along the lines of “Dear God, what is that thing?”

1. Passion and Ponies (Chocoholics #2) – Tara Sivec
Passion and Ponies - Tara Sivec
Thoughts: A My Little Pony and fuzzy handcuffs. That is all.

2. Divine Makeover – Sharla Fritz
Divine Makeover - Sharla Fritz
Thoughts: If God makes you beautiful, then why would you buy a book about makeovers? Also, if God makes us beautiful, shouldn’t we all be frolicking about in the nude, as intended? We’re covering up our beauty with clothes. This book is working at cross-purposes to its intentions.

3. The Word Changers – Ashlee Willis
The Word Changers - Ashlee Willis
Thoughts: Pretty sure the back of a girl was pasted onto the front. So that girl has boobs on her back. And that’s just one issue. *stares in wonderment at the photoshop fail*

Outstanding Cover of the Week:

The Lonely

The Outstanding Cover of the Week is chosen by a Cover Snark reader. They are free to pick any of the week’s covers, whether they’re to my personal tastes or not. If you’d like to choose the cover for a week, either email or tweet me. You will need to be available Wednesday evening to consult.

The Lonely - Ainslie Hogarth

Today, welcome Lyn (Great Imaginations), who has selected The Lonely by Ainslie Hogarth. Here’s why:

“This was a hard one! Trust me, I picked three of them and finally went with my inner book geek. My final decision rests with lucky book number 28, The Lonely, by Ainslie Hogarth. I know – there are some fabulous covers here on Cover Snark this week. However, what drew me to The Lonely was the overall effect. Without the squirrel, the book cover looks almost generic yet very pretty. An upward shot of trees. While the clarity and the color scheme appear excellent and crisp, the peeking little rodent at the top makes the cover look refreshing and interesting. It feels that everyone is afraid to take a chance on something different. But this book took a chance, dared to live the dream, and shocked and awed the word with something funny and aesthetically pleasing. The filter adds a certain enchanted look, and the sudden pop of color in the font really draws the eye to the title.”

42 – I think this calls for a redesign of the whole Abhorsen series
    43 – very, very pretty.

      42. The covers are a bit dated at this point. I would imagine one is coming? They do LOVE redesigning these days. Just look at Earthbound.

  2. 2. There’s a third one? This cover doesn’t match the other two at all (unless this is a foreign edition). I’d warn her to be careful of those strings of barbed wire. If one pierces her heart because she tripped falling for him, her heart might not beat for him much longer. There are only so many more times it will beat when each beat sends out a stream of blood.

    3. Nice, but for some reason, it just doesn’t appeal to me.

    4. Unless you killed a cop and never got caught. I suppose that would be lucky.

    8. We don’t know what is going on and it is therefore scary. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED, BOOK.

    9. He looks like a douche. Someone should donkey kick him. I’d volunteer as tribute, but he’d shatter my foot.

    10. How to seduce a band geek: learn to play their favorite song on your instrument, especially if you have a weird and/or difficult instrument.

    12. They’re mentally plotting how to get the other in the ocean so they can shove the person’s head underwater and drown them. I know these things.

    16. What makes me laugh is the imagined image of this ferris wheel of death flying over the city sparkling like fireworks as it moves. Half the city will think they’re on an acid trip!

    17. *burns them all*

    20. Boooooooooooooring.

    24. GRUMPYYYYYY. But yes, this is an entirely unnecessary book.

    27. *squints* I swear these was another cover for this before. I don’t care for the redesigns, though. Too urban fantasy for me, I guess. An unusually practical example but generally unremarkable.

    36. Yeah, that’s pretty creepy. Is he drawing from the side or something and we’re just looking at the drawing from his right? Because otherwise, he detached his hand.

    38. Yeah, his stair is very blank, not being there and all. His stare is blank too. But yes, the girl is awesome. I like it!

    44. It looks like someone was drunk and playing with Photoshop fliters. No me gusta nada.

    1. Boooooring.

    2. Remember, this is Penguin. They go hard when they do cover redesigns–and by that, I mean they hit the alcohol hard. Drinking games! I like the triangles better. They really need to stop at the second because when they do three redesigns, they fuck it all up on the final one.

    1. Two of my friends are dating and they’re both MLP fanatics, so I’m going to have to show them this cover.

    • Christina Franke says:

      2. Yeah, I did notice that, but the covers are just generally not that great, so I really don’t care.

      3. I totally get that, but for some reason I LOVE it.

      4. Good point. Certainly better than being caught.

      8. SCIENCE IS DOING THINGS. *hides*

      9. Let’s get an actual donkey. It’s probably the expert at donkey-kicking douches.

      10. Seriously, there should be a bassoon or something on this cover. Talk about unique!

      12. This escalated quickly.

      16. That would be great. And then they all die. HEA.

      27. Yeah, I thought there was too, but couldn’t find it. *shrugs* And yeah, it’s not terrible, but it’s not highly appealing to me.

      38. Shhhhhhhh. Typing is hard.

      46. Sho is.

      2. Didn’t actually know it was Penguin, but now it all makes sense.

      1. Make sure they also read the blurb. *coughs*

  3. Meg says:

BACK BOOBS! BACK BOOBS! (there’s actually a lot of stuff I want to comment on but alas, this is not the time)

  4. I think I’d pick the squirrel one too!

MLP is forever ruined for me. And I’m pretty sure Jack let go (#6) because she only has one hand. 😉

  6. 1. Ooh. Now that her YA series is starting to get good, I’m curious whether anyone I know from there shows up in the Parasol Protectorate and this new series.

    3. Well. WELL! *adds to TBR*

    5. I don’t know, but she needs to get that pink eye checked out.

    6. The fog-floating wall to the right irritates me. I don’t know why. Maybe because there’s no reason to worry about her drowning when there’s land RIGHT THERE?!

    7. I APPROVE. Maybe not of the hairs, but definitely everything else.

    10. They don’t look very band-y. Shouldn’t they have feathered hats or something?

    11. Yeah, same. Personal space, lady.

    15. Yes! She tried to commit suicide. Also, oooh illustrated cover.

    16. I can’t decide if I want to laugh or feel very, very nauseated.

    20. Ooh. I like the white/black contrast. Not sure how I feel about the rest of it.

    21. Erm, the book cover is cracked? Why?

    24. It took me way too long to figure out that she was sitting on the rail and not merely standing and flashing the entire city for giggles.

    28. I am so freaked out right now. It feels like it’s looking at my throat.

    30. *whispers* I think he’s holding the arm. Imma leave now.

    32. Wow. I mean, good on ya for upholding the family name, man, but maybe a pen name would have been in order? I hear minions giggling every time I read it.

    40. I find it interesting that you can tell at a glance that Harry and Ruthanna are pubbed by the same people.

    41. Oh, and Laybourne. Harry, Ruthanna, and Emmy are all pub buddies. Oh but I really like the art treatment on this one. Very cool. Tor has the coolest covers.

    45. Yuck. Who wants dirt all over their backside?

    47. Woah. WOAH. That BW swirl!

    50. YAY FIRE! Also, this is my Cover Love pick next week. Boom.

    51. Thanks. Now I’ll have Whoopi in my head all day.

    53. Hasn’t this title already been done?

    55. YAY FIRE!

      1. Wish I could help you, but I’ve read no Gail Carriger. Since this is Orbit, it might be my first of hers. 🙂

      6. Well, she doesn’t drown. Jack did. You see?

      7. WHY IS IT FURRY?

      10. Oh my god, yes. They should. Or instruments. It’s rather a waste.

      21. Ummmm, because reasons?

      24. I just thought it was a really stupid dress design. I mean, to be fair, I feel like something like that has gone down a runway at some point.

      40. Yeah, has a really distinctive style and I loooove it. But actually the one before them is also the same people.

      45. Not me, but maybe some people don’t mind. I also hate that the GIRL is always on the bottom in these scenes.

      50. Really? We have different taste in covers. :-p

      51. I regret nothing.

      53. That it has. By Elizabeth Eulberg. This series also has another title that’s drawing off P&P. Mix up yo Austen.

      55. I now have another reason to be terrified of you.

  7. Bonnie says:

    1. Yeah, if it wasn’t QUITE so pink it would’ve been better. A nice burgandy to match her coat would have been nice.
    2. That’s the lamest of lame taglines. Wouldn’t have had much issue if that wasn’t there.
    3. This is THE BEST. I love simplistic covers. That font is fantastic too.
    4. Wait. I thought there already was a prequel. I swear I already read a prequel. Maybe this is prequel 2.0.
    5. She’s creeping me out with those eyes. And what is Damned to Hell? Is that the tagline? I thought it was part of the title at first.
    6. Well she doesn’t appear to be drowning… maybe that comes later?
    7. Ew! Creepy! He does have fur!
    9. Why do half naked guys on these covers always have the most ridiculous fucking tattoos? I swear.
    11. You’re right. Why does the bookworm have to look geekier than a band geek? Do not approve.
    13. Is he a vampire? *runs to check synopsis* Ha! He is. I was wondering why his teeth were poking out like that. Lol
    14. That girl is the plague of book covers.
    15. I saw a different version of this cover before they released this as final and the one I saw was WAY better. This one is slightly boring.
    16. hahahahahaha
    17. I thought they were swords at first but nope. Those are definitely needles. *nightmares for weeks*
    18. I actually really like this one! The smoke and lightning oooooh.
    19. Nope, you’re right. This is the best of the bunch. Alfred Hitchcock would be proud.
    21. hahahaha She probably should have thought to grab the record player too, duh.
    22. Okay so I totally loved this one when I first saw it but that thing around her neck totally does look like a poodle. Lol
    24. So wait, these three authors alone separated out their stories to make another mini-anthology? That makes zero sense.
    27. Very cool but you’re totally right about that font.
    28. LOL It looks like this cover just with creeper squirrel.
    30. That shit looks like something out of American Horror Story. *runs away with you*
    33. This looks like a craft project gone wrong.
    42. I LOVE that cover. Really need to read this series.
    50. Wow what a huge changeup in comparison to previous covers. Not sure I like.
    52. I CAN’T WAIT FOR THIS ONE. hahahahaha

    Cover Battles
Damn those Robin Hobb covers are freaking awesome. *WANTS*

    • Christina Franke says:

      1. It’s just too round and out there.

      2. Yeah, though it does look like that Jane Yolen (I think) Holocaust book, right?

      3. Is just so pretty and classic.

      4. Yeah, they’re all over these stupid novellas these days.

      5. Must be the tagline, but it’s much too big.

      6. No, no, Jack drowned. I’m sure of it.

      7. I don’t know why this makes a robot immediately terrifying, but I am just not prepared for furry robots.

      9. And his soul patch! Blergh. But, yeah, like tattoos can be sexy sometimes, but they always have the least sexy ones.

      13. He’s just got a really bad overbite.

      15. yeah, I posted that and then was made to take it down. I think it’s interesting to see both, but whatever. I like this one better, but I have the feeling the other would be better for marketing, since the book looks depressing and not cutesy.

      19. Yes, I am right. *preens*

      21. Maybe she’s got powers like Isabel in Roswell and she can play it with her hand?

      22. She skinned a poodle and made an ugly neck wrap.

      24. I also question the sense of it. Why not write NEW stories?

      28. But squirrely.

      30. Yeahhhhh.

      42. I was really bored by the first book, but I’m going to try again on audio. I think Tim Curry was the narrator, so win.

      50. Yeah, I miss the original style. I thought it had gone self-pubbed to be honest, but apparently not.

      52. LET ME AT IT.

  8. Gillian says:

    1. Mmmm, where can I get some custard?

    3. Love.

    13. This is adorable.

    14. THAT GIRL.

    15. I wish I liked this more. This is one of those covers that I SHOULD like, but I don’t love the actual execution of it.

    19. Ooo, yes, best of the covers.

    20. I LOVE THIS. But I’ll be wary after All That Glows.

    22. “Is ginger girls holding their own knives to their throats a cover trend for 2014?” Apparently. Whatevs, I dig it.

    23. Oooo, I like.

    26. I’m totes on board with cheating if it’s awesome femslash cheating! Booyah!

    27. I, too, hate the redesigned font, but her braid is AMAZING.

    31. I thought this said “Binary Whiteness” at first and I cringed but it’s not, it’s all cool.

    36. I kind of love this, but I hate the font.

    37. The yellow and the gold clash most heinously.

    38. Blank stair. Snerk. Also the girl is bad ass.

    39. This is gorgeous.

    41. Bahahaha!

    46. He is so super casual about that metal fist thing bursting through his chest. “Sigh. My life.”

CB1. I will miss the chairs.

    CB3. Yeah, no.

WTF1. Favorite book synopsis of all time.

WTF3. Yeah, there are boobs on her back. Also, she might be a child?

      1. Not sure for you, but I’m sure LA has it. There’s a burger place with frozen custard near here and YUMMY TO THE MAX.

      15. I mean, it’s more appealing to me than the previous, but I also think the blurb sounds depressing, and this cover looks like it should go to an adorkable book, so I really don’t know.

      16. A ferris wheel in the sky is your worst nightmare? I’m pretty sure the next one is mine.

      20. Same. I keep eyeing it on GR, because Asia, but also the reviews for the first book she wrote and…

      26. I’d be more inclined if it were anyone but Amanda Grace Hubbard.

      27. She should be on GOT with that braid, am I right?

      28. I think its face is cute, but it also scares Shae, even though she will WILLINGLY PUT A TARANTULA ON HER FACE.

36, They just really love their labelmaker.

      37. IT BURNS.

      43, It isssss.

      46. lol life.

      53. That it has.

      1. But I won’t miss the tagline.

      3. I just. BACK BOOBS.

  9. How sad is it that I’m not even surprised about the My Little Pony book…You don’t even want to know the weird MLP crap you can buy now. *shudders*
I did not notice the back boobs the first time I saw this…but now I can’t stop staring at it. So bizarre!!

  10. Kayla Beck says:

    2. The tagline sucks, but the cover itself is killer.

    3. It’s a leaky Twizzler!

    22. She looks like a ginger Emma Watson.

    24. I guess they decided that they don’t want to play with the other children anymore.

    26. *giggles* This makes me happy, though I’ll never read it. And if he’s a typical teenage boy, he probably won’t mind.

    27. This is worse than the feather dripping blood. *sigh*

    28. This is a joke, right?

  11. 1. Gail Carriger always gets those cool looking covers. This is going to look great next to my Parasol series.
    2. Those tacky, cliche taglines all the time..
    3. I love the title font. This is definitely a book I would pick up in the bookstore.
    7. I was not expecting this when I scrolled down. That was creepy.
    8. I’m SO in love with these covers, because I’m sciency 😀 Mitosis!
    14. Before I read your reaction, I also thought ‘AGAIN? Is there no other girl?’
    22. SO. EXCITED. And I love the cover, a lot 🙂
    27. It looks more like a cover for an Urban Fantasy book.
    33. ‘Hey, we put some random things together and we have a cover’, so weird.
    40. This looks like a Tor novella cover.
    52. Pretty, looks good with the first cover.
    54. How lazy..
    55. I like it.

I liked the first redesign of Earthbound, but the new one is ugly. I also prefer the US cover of The winner’s curse. UK cover for Crown of Renewal, there is less going on and the woman looks a bit weird on the US one. UK redesign for assassin’s apprentice, pretty. The same for the next two.
The WTF covers, haha. “Who’s my daddy?” on the passion and ponies cover, what a tagline.

  12. 3. As overdone as the infinity sign is, I’m loving this cover because it just WORKS

    8. Uhh is that sperm in the bottom right circle? Or just really big commas?

    15. “There are no accidents” but I’m pretty sure a car driving off of a road and down down down is an accident

    16. HAHAHAHAHAHA my favorite thing about this cover is that they put the thing that Four’s afraid of onto his book

    22. If I ever had to do a cover like this, I’d probably kill myself because I’d bring the knife up too quickly or something and stab my face off

    24. All we need now is a unsuspecting artist to stand behind her and hold her hips! (and maybe for them to get onto a boad, but the pose is close enough lol)

    32. NEVILLE LONGBOTTOM!! (and it’s totally not a coincidence that Harry Sidebottom’s first name is Harry and his last name is really close to Neville’s)

    43. I am loving that dress and how it sprays out into all of that other stuff

    49. DON’T LET GO…OF YOUR HAIR WHILE JOGGING (it really does look like she’s grabbing onto her hair because of how black it is)

WTF 1. Looks like the Pony’s going to get a little tied up in those handcuffs!

WTF 2. HAHA her shoulder doesn’t even match up with her arm and the book’s blank so they’re definitely NOT changing any words today

  13. I always read and enjoy these posts but never comment. LET US CHANGE THIS.

    2. The rose petals make the think of Attack on Titan (where there is a scene were red blood cells float through the air like cherry blossoms in other anime. I am not lying)

    3. I really love this one. So simple but still kind of creepy because blood.

    8. The title is making me thing of my classes last year and parasites we learnt about. I have no idea what the blobs are (evolving cell or something? Maybe I’d be able to tell you in a few weeks after we have parasitology lectures. Or maybe I’ve completely forgotten something basic which is probably not good…)

    14. I don’t think I’ve ever seen this chick before… That or the other covers she’s on aren’t impressive/terrible enough to remember

    15. MATH

    16. New phase added to Dauntless initiation: Giant Flying Spinny Wheel of Death

    17. I don’t normally find syringes/needles terrifying but SO MANY O__O

    20. It took me too long to figure out what the bloody hell was going on in that cover.

    22. Pretty font is best bit

    25. I would like this better if there was some actual anatomy or something on there I think. I mean, chairs are pretty cool paces for resting your butt, but unless they’re really awesomely designed there kind of boring to look at. Even the little blue one.

    27. I haven’t even read these and I miss the old covers

    30. That is really creepy but I think I approve because of said creepy?

    38. I really like this one because awesome illustration and pirate/sea themed!! I believe that creature is a ferret. And that dude has a seedy face.

    42. Dragon *____* I really need to read/reread this series…

    55. She looks pretty badass. Or insane. Same difference 😛

WTF1. It this about… Bronies? *backs away slowly*

Ahhh, I was all excited for the Clariel cover reveal and then I was so sick that I forgot all about it. I may be having a heart attack, I’m so excited over it. ♥_♥ Though I am slightly saddened that Clariel might not match the covers of the other three in my shelf.

  15. The internet ate my comment, so it’s short now. I don’t think I’ve seen that model/stock photo as often as you have o.o. Or I never seem to recognize the people anyway. Also lolol until you pointed out that the Walled City was a person’s head sideways, I kept thinking, I don’t get what this cover is trying to show me. WHOOPS I SO SMART.

Also, I agree with Lyn. The squirrel makes that cover. And the lens. And the randomly red font in the middle. If you are ever short on having someone choose a cover, let me know! I’ve distanced myself a lot from twitter/social media like things (except pinning covers), but I reply to email pretty quickly.

  16. 3. I love this! The font is a little offputting, but I like it.
    6. HOW DARE YOU *sings My Heart Will Go On*
    7. I’m torn between LOVING this, and being creeped out because it looks rather bug-like.
    8. I don’t know, but it looks like sperm to me.
    13. Haaaaaa.
    16. This looks like something out of Final Destination.
    19. Jfc, how many covers are there.
    13. What the hell is that thing on the left? A blanket? *squints*
    28. Awwwwwww.
    30. RUN. It looks like the bloodied hand is stroke his chest.
    35. Babe, though. Ew.
    38. So I’m likely to read this, because pirates, but it looks like it’s got some His Dark Materials happening over there.
    40. Deep ocean fish, maybe? I see a tentacle and fish eyes and other gross things.
    42. Who does that girl think she is? Daenerys? You can’t chain a dragon, bro.
    46. O_O
CB 1. Aw. I had such hope for those chairs.
CB 2. I definitely prefer US PB Take 1. Mostly because I have a hard time telling what Take 2 is.
CB 3. No no no, RULE BRITANNIA.
CB 5. While I miss the stag, I’m kind of in love with these redesigns.
WTF 1. Erm, are they allowed to use MLP on the cover?
