Cover Snark (78): The One with Realistic Girls

CoverSnarkChristina2

Welcome to Cover Snark, where the people are snarky and the covers quiver in fear. Since I don’t write many snarky book reviews here on A Reader of Fictions, Cover Snark is my outlet. If you click on the title of the book, where possible, I’ve linked to Goodreads. Clicking on the cover itself will show you the cover in a larger size, in most cases. Feel free to love covers I hate and vice versa. Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

Shiny and New:

1. The Break-Up Artist – Philip Siegel
The Break-Up Artist - Philip Siegel
Thoughts: I find the artistic style of the people really upsetting, but I like how real they look. A girl who’s not model skinny on a cover. Progress! I do love the technicolor-ness of it, and I’m a bit intrigued by the dramatic pulling away in front of a graffitied building and a pizza box.

2. The Other Way Around – Sashi Kaufman
The Other Way Around - Sashi Kaufman
Thoughts: White space can be nice, but TOO MUCH. Also, I really don’t know what they’re going for with the triangles or the font treatment on AROUND.

3. The Warrior (Dante Walker #3) – Victoria Scott
The Warrior (Dante Walker #3) by Victoria Scott
Thoughts: Guess whose back. Back again. Dante’s BACK, ALRIGHT!

4. Dark Windows – Louis Greenberg
Dark Windows - Louis Greenberg
Thoughts: At first, this is pretty simple. Then you notice the screaming face, and your dreams will be haunted.

5. Scan (Scan #1)- Walter Jury & S. E. Fine
Scan - Walter Jury & S. E. Fine
Thoughts: Space is pretty. Except for the spaghetti monster. Who knew they had that right, huh?

6. Unmaking Marchant – Ella James

Thoughts: A tiny feathered dinosaur is stealing your ribbon! SNAP.

8. Fire Kin (The Half-Light City #4) – M.J. Scott
Fire Kin (The Half-Light City #4) by M.J. Scott
Thoughts: She looks like Piper from Charmed, only really pissed off, maybe at the fact that her dress is about two seconds from catching on fire.

9. Stroke of Fear – Alla Kar
Stroke of Fear - Alla Kar
Thoughts: No. NO. You should not fear the people you love. Maybe that they’ll leave you or something, but bodily harm fear is not love or sexy. STOP.

10. Forged (Altered #0.5) – Jennifer Rush
Forged (Altered) - Jennifer Rush
Thoughts: This is ABSolutely boring. ABominable lack of imagination. These cover designers have acquired some bad hABits.

11. Sixth Grave on the Edge (Charley Davidson #6) – Darynda Jones
Sixth Grave on the Edge - Darynda Jones
Thoughts: Skulduggery.

12. The Witch of Belladonna Bay – Suzanne Palmieri

Thoughts: Why is “of” in a different font color?

13. To Bear an Iron Key – Jackie Morse Kessler
To Bear an Iron Key - Jackie Morse Kessler

Thoughts: A calla lily is an interesting superhero-battling weapon.

17. Girls Like Us – Gail Giles

Thoughts: They actually put a non-skinny girl on a cover. Progress! Also, this makes me very curious about the book.

18. Black Knight (Witch World #2) – Christopher Pike

19. Bleed Like Me – C. Desir

21. The Line That Binds (The Line That Binds #1) – J.M. Miller
The Line That Binds - J.M. Miller

Thoughts: The curse must be the hair. It just keeps growing back.

36. Exposure (Virals #4) – Kathy Reichs & Brendan Reichs
Exposure (Virals) - Kathy Reichs
Thoughts: I like this okay, but it sucks for Brendan to get so much less billing. His name is totally an afterthought.

Cover Battles:

1. Unwrapped Sky – Rjurik Davidson

Unwrapped Sky
Unwrapped Sky - Rijurik Davidson

US vs. UK: The US cover’s pretty neat, but pardon me while I just stare at the epicness of the UK cover. SO PRETTY. I’m also really intrigued by how I would never peg these as being about the same book.

2. Red Queen (Witch World #1) – Christopher Pike

Witch World
Red Queen (Witch World #1) - Christopher Pike

Hardback vs. Paperback: Not in love with either of these, but the redesign definitely looks a bit more unique and professional. I’ll call this a good change.

3. Teaching Roman (Good Girls Don’t #2) – Gennifer Albin

Teaching Roman
Teaching Roman (Good Girls Don't #2) - Gennifer Albin

Take 1 vs. Take 2: Now that Gennifer Albin’s claimed her new adult books, there’s a new cover…and I do not approve. The other was sort of flirty and fun. This ones dreary and mopey. Nope.

4. Idols (Icons #2) by Margaret Stohl

Idols (Icons #2) - Margaret Stohl
Idols (Icons, #2) by Margaret Stohl

Take 1 vs. Take 2: Less brown. That’s good I suppose. *shrugs*

5. Unremembered (Unremembered #1) – Jessica Brody

Unremembered
Unremembered UK
Unremembered (Unremembered #1) - Jessica Brody

US vs. UK Original vs. UK Redesign: I’m definitely for the generic US cover. The original UK one’s rather cheesy with the fire forming running people, and I’m not sure what’s up with the symbol on ice in the redesign. Also, that symbol looks like a bunch of swastikas formed ranks. Or maybe that’s just me. SPRINGTIME FOR HITLER AND GERMANY. WINTER FOR POLAND AND FRAAAAANCE.

6. Unforgotten (Unremembered #2) – Jessica Brody

Unforgotten
Unforgotten (Unremembered #2) - Jessica Brody

US vs. UK: Well, though I still don’t get the symbol, anything is better than kiss of lens flare.

7. Burn (Fuse #3) – Julianna Baggott

Burn
Burn (Fuse #3) - Julianna Baggott

US vs. UK: I am partial to the origami cover over the feathers.

WTF of the Week:

WTF of the Week began as a special category for one cover I saw, but was so popular it became a recurring feature. Here, I highlight covers, both new and old, that I’ve found, which, upon viewing, made me either snort or say something along the lines of “Dear God, what is that thing?” If you would like to be part of the fun and have spotted a truly hilarious or horrifying cover, submit it and your snark to cynicalsapphire@gmail.com and you might be included, though I will filter through submissions and limit the number of entries per week.

1. Badass (The Wild Series #1) – S.K. Hartley
Badass - S.K. Hartley
Thoughts: This cover amuses me greatly. I suppose a lack of ass might make it a bad one?

2. The Republic of Thieves (Gentleman Bastard Series #3) – Scott Lynch
The Republic of Thieves (Gentleman Bastard Series #3) - Scott Lynch
Thoughts: Because apparently this is about gay pirates? UPDATE: No, I did not post a fan art cover. This was the audiobook cover up on Audible last week. Sometime since I found it last week, it was changed to something slightly less awful.

3. The Will to Love (Scarlet Fever) – Selene Chardou
The Will to Love (Scarlet Fever #2) - Selene Chardou
Thoughts: Okay, so this looks like Blue Lagoon only they’ve got scarlet fever or leprosy or something. Also, Brooke’s bra doesn’t fit her right.

4. Other People’s Shit – C.V. Hunt
Other People's Shit - C.V. Hunt
Thoughts: Yup, those are toilet bowl scrubbers and what I presume is a shit balloon.

Outstanding Cover of the Week:

Chasing the Star Garden

The Outstanding Cover of the Week is chosen by a Cover Snark reader. They are free to pick any of the week’s covers, whether they’re to my personal tastes or not. If you’d like to choose the cover for a week, either email or tweet me. You will need to be available Wednesday evening to consult.

Chasing the Star Garden - Melanie Karsak

Today, welcome Blythe (Finding Bliss in Books), who has selected Chasing the Star Garden by Melanie Karsak. Here’s why:

“This cover is just all kinds of absolute gorgeousness. I ADORE the colors used for the sky, and the airship is awesome. And the ocean is just flawless on this. So pretty. It’s all just so pretty.”

    1. I like how different this is, even though the people don’t quite fit the background. Still, I’m intrigued.

    2. Looool I was waiting for the picture to load. This cover is blank like the white space.

    3. More Dante Walker?! Sigh. “Dante is sexier, funnier” …because he was both of those things in the first book? (I like your pun, though.)

    5. I’m actually a bit tired of space covers. Space will always be pretty, but it’s EVERYWHERE.

    13. …guess what song I’ll be singing all day.

    16. If I ever get in a fight with a superhero, I’ll make sure to wear a leather skirt and tall high heeled boots. Wouldn’t want to look like crap while trying to save my life, would I?

    25. The birds are very Escher. Interesting.

    29. “Second star to the right, and straight on till morning!”

    31. Oooh, I love this! Very cool.

CB 1. I liked the minotaur but PRETTY DREAMLAND <3

    2. The first looks like a red Richelle Mead cover. No thanks.

      1. The concept, I love, but the two art styles do not blend. Also, I just noticed that an owl stole someone’s shoe.

      2. Ha, yup. This happened to other people too. It’s like they got tired and were like “let’s just put the name here at the bottom. It’s stylistic! Yeah! It’s totally fine like this.”

      3. But it says it’s over, so he will not be back, back again.

      5. I am not yet tired of space, though I may get there.

      13. At least it wasn’t the Backstreet Boys one I referenced earlier?

      16. Assuredly not. They say women are weaker than men, but that’s only because we fight encumbered, like how Westley and Inigo started out using their left hands.

      29. Oooh, I missed a Disney reference opportunity. I blame my exhaustion.

      31. Can you believe this is a small press?

      1. Seriously, what do the minotaur and the dreamland have in common??

      2. It does, doesn’t it?

  2. Alessandra says:

Many pretty covers this week. Love love love Chasing The Star Garden (bonus Venice profile! The Adriatic Sea never looked so pretty) Also the blue Unwrapped Sky, Breakfast Served Anytime and The Secret Hum of a Daisy.

I also like The World Without a Future for some reason.

Chasing the Star Garden and Unwrapped Sky are my favorites as well. Those are basically the best covers for me. Just the sort of thing I love. Not a fan of The World Without a Future, because crosses make me think religion which makes me go no no no.

  3. Kathy L. says:

So before I get to the covers I just want to say I ended up watching Coffee Prince because of you and I see why you love it so much! Also when is the #GoongWatchalong I thought it was supposed to be last Sunday but when I searched for tweets with that hashtag nothing came up? Is it going to be this coming Sunday or did I have the wrong hashtag? Anyway snark time!
    1-2. I completely agree.
    4. What screaming face? *looks again at cover* O MY GOODNESS!!! THAT FREAKED ME OUT SO MUCH!
    6. Her mouth looks weird at this angle. Don’t you think?
    7. What is up with her left hand? It looks like a guys hand.
    8. I read Stroke of Ear! haha
    11. I wonder where I can get those because I would so wear them!
    16. I think this cover would be better in WTF. I mean the blood, the lily, the tattoo, the cape, and then there’s that dust? in her armpit and on her shoe! So weird!
    18. This cover makes total sense because I kiss my purple ball of smoke everyday before I go to bed. *sarcasm*
    19. I know this isn’t a vampire book but I am definitely getting that vibe.
    23. I actually really like this for no real reason.
    24. This is pretty cool even though it looks self-published.
    28. Toon! Does she have a brother named Nick? Cause that would be AMAZING!
    29. I really like these colors!
    31. And now that you’ve mentioned Stardust I want to read this so much!
    34. That cover is so COOL!
    36. Fits the previous books but is also very boring.
CB1. I think I like the UK one cause the underwater city is so intriguing.
CB2. The first one fits the book a bit more so I going with the original.
CB5. I adore the UK redesign especially cause the symbol is relevant to the book!
WTF1. You don’t even need to snark this cover. It does it itself! BADASS *snorts*

    • Christina Franke says:

Oh yeah, my bad. It WAS supposed to start on Sunday. Here’s what happened: I had a business trip spring up last week, and so I was traveling on Sunday, and just totally blanked. We’ll start some time this weekend. Once I know when, I’ll try to tweet with the hashtag. This is why I shouldn’t ever be responsible for planning things. Haha.

SO glad you loved Coffee Prince, though! It makes me so happy.

      4. RIGHT? It’s TERRIFYING.

      11. Search the web and I bet they exist!

      16. It’s not bad or hilarious enough for WTF. Basically, to go in WTF, I need to gape at it or choke laughing.

      18. Who doesn’t?

      19. It’s the blood. I just can’t think of anything but the Garbage song.

      24. It definitely does, though, if I remember right, it’s Spencer Hill, so this is better than most of their covers.

      31. Not promising any commonalities, mind you.

      34. Made me add the first book in the series. I must know!

      1. I don’t think the city is underwater; I suspect it’s a sort of dreamworld. Or something. I don’t know.

      2. Ah, I haven’t read the book. Good to know though.

      5. I read it, but I do not remember that symbol. Of course, the book was really blah for me, so I guess I’m not surprised.

  4. Is it just me, or is the font for The Chance You Won’t Return on a LOT of books these days?

Also, I had NO idea that Gennifer Albin wrote that series! Shows how much I pay attention …

LOVE the redesigned cover for Unwrapped Sky … makes me think of Neil Gaiman a bit.

I had the SAME THOUGHT about the font on THE CHANCE YOU WON’T RETURN, and I *never* notice fonts. But that one just seems to be everywhere! I like the cover anyway, but I definitely felt like the font sapped out some of the uniqueness.

Yes, it is. That font’s on everything. I was thinking that myself, but was too lazy to say it when I could just sing some John Denver.

Ha, she revealed it when Catching Liam got a new cover a few months back.

Unwrapped Sky wasn’t redesigned. It’s the US cover and the UK cover, but the UK one sure would look at home on a Neil Gaiman book, I agree!

Love love love the cover for THE SECRET HUM OF A DAISY, and in general appreciate just how *different* so many of these covers are – BLEED LIKE ME, BREAK-UP ARTIST… and CHASING THE STAR GARDEN’s is totally stunning. To me the biggest disappoint is TEACHING ROMAN’s, because IIRC from the first one, he’s Hispanic, and I thought it’d be nice to finally see a LI of color on a NA cover. I’ll read it anyway because teacher-student books are my crack, but sad to see he’s another Whitey Whiterson.

    3. *HIGH FIVES YOU*

    9. Fear? Is THAT what she’s stroking? I think not.

    10. This cover makes me CrABby. They need to fABricate some better ones. These are ABysmal.

    12. Also that blurb at the top is, like, novel-length,

    13. Oh, heyyyy, Baloo, welcome to Cover Snark.

    17. Girls like us! Are… see-through.

    18. They are also WAY too attached to said oversize bowling ball.

Maybe the Goodreads cover was a fan developed version left over from before the book was released?

    • Christina Franke says:

Well, the one shown here was an audiobook cover. They’re notoriously terrible a lot of the time. I am aware that that is the most common cover. When I looked that cover up last week, it was the one on Audible.com, and that’s where I downloaded the shown image from. They seem to have noticed and have taken it down, but I didn’t put fan art up.

    3. There’s a sexy back/sexyback/Justin Timberlake pun here somewhere, but I’m exhausted and annoyed and want to wring Roomie #3’s neck for some odd reason. Someone else can make that pun if they haven’t already.

    7. Unusually simple and weird. Hm. But thank you for reminding me I need to buy this! It’s the sequel to When the Sea is Rising Red that Macmillan didn’t want, I guess.

    8. I definitely see the resemblance to Piper, but she reminds me a lot of Prue to. Hm… Either way, hiiiiii, pretty dress!

    19. I imagine being cut in half caused that heart a great deal of pain. You might call it heartache.

    4. I think it’s kind of silly they did a big new reveal for a minor tweak in color. Or was the first take one that got leaked and the second is the REAL cover? Because I swear they had a reveal for the first version too.

I totally agree with almost all your cover battles – I loved how as soon I as thought what I liked about one or decided which I preferred I’d scroll down and you’d articulate what I was thinking. The only discrepancy was #5 – I don’t get the symbol thing either, but I like the colors against the stark black background more than the paler blurry US cover 🙂

  19. 1. This hurts my eyes.

    2. I think this one will look better on a shelf than on a white screen.

    15. Ooh! For some reason, my brain goes “Brazilian.” Is it Brazilian? That would be exciting.

    19 Nope nope nope nope

    22. Where’s her shirt? Why doesn’t she have a shirt? Someone get this girl a shirt!

    32. Adorbs!

    35. Guy cleavage is not attractive.
